It seemed to me that we were discussing from different perspectives. Some of us were learning. Others, evidently not.For the record, I don't believe that there's a viable a two-state solution. It's pretty clear that the Zionists are intent on being the master race in the region. While Israel exists, the chances of peace are slim to none.

One of the conditions imposed by the UN was that Israel would declare it borders. That has never happened. (They probably intend to take total control from the river to the sea, then move on to "Greater Israel".) If we're going to obsess over borders, then Israel doesn't formally exist.

I wondered about that. It turns out to be irrelevant. A "state" is an organised political community. Territory is usual, but not necessary under all definitions.Recognising a state formalises its existence. We can haggle over territory later.

Australian Senator quits Labor after voting for Palestinian state
Senator Fatima Payman has resigned from the Australian Labor Party days after she split from other Labor representatives to vote in support of recognising a Palestinian state.
“My family did not flee from a war-torn country to come here as refugees for me to remain silent when I see atrocities inflicted on innocent people,” she told reporters on Thursday.

There's a bunch the ALP could learn from this debacle:
- The ALP should allow more "conscience votes" rather than enforcing the rule that you have to vote along party lines on every Senate vote.
- Senator Payman was right to take a stand for the sake of recognising of Palestinian statehood.
- Senator Payman will now sit on the crossbench, meaning the government is down one Senator, and they might need to learn to negotiate with Senator Payman if they want to pass legislation.
- The ALP's heavy-handed use of rules has pushed-out a rising star.
- Rather than celebrating diversity, the ALP has created division. The ALP has hurt itself in a particularly messy fashion that harms their reputation.

My 7 pence worth: The ABC is no longer an unbiased source of news (tho’ relative to others sources, better than none) - but it seems they are now working for the ALP dirt unit.Headline says *caucus* colleagues express concern over reference to god. This pretty much tells us where the beat up is coming from, and what motivates it. If this were actually a referendum on religious belief, we should poll members of labor caucus. If God is suddenly an emotional issue in aus politics is it only because Sen Payman is Muslim? How many alp folk would openly declare their beliefs? Why do we still say the lord’s prayer (insincerely for the most part) in parlt? Why was there little said when tony abbott subsidised some catholic seminary course in WA (don’t ask me for the source, i’m not a journalist)
as an atheist, i’m wary of religious dictatorship, but i don’t have a problem with faith per se. muslims don’t scare me any more than christians tbh, and in australia, even less. i’ve taken some real crap from christians over the years - not only nuns - and christianity has not stopped this country from being legally and culturally classist, sexist, racist and 100 types of phobic.
If someone says something is in god’s hands the meaning could range from purely metaphorical to an expression of religious determinism. generally, my first instinct is to think of other people’s mention of god as an indication of conscience. wrt palestine, sen payman’s conscience is ok. when she let’s us know that pauline hanson is actually right to be afraid, she will be outvoted.

@treleanor I suspect the party policy #FatimaPayman broke was the unwritten 'We will not respect the Greens'.
It is a strong policy position, and one that underlines the inherent self-doubt of the #ALP. As long as the ALP maintains childish hatred of the Greens, they will bleed votes (and members too!) across to the Greens.
It's very much relevant to #Makarrata. The ALP *could* say: you Greens, YOU do the running now. (We got basted by Murdoch on #Voice.) But you guys are crazy enough to have another go? Go you good things. Burn hard - off you go. We'll stand to one side, offer a free vote in the Parliament and be helpful in every way *except* ways that risk our own skin.
The #Greens are, can be, could be, a bloody great asset to the ALP. Someone over there just needs to trip over the #ClueStick.

@NewtonMark Many in the #ALP have the idea that #TrueBelievers are those who put party loyalty above self. They believe this is admirable.
More pointedly, they believe it is essential for gaining power. <confession> I envy them somewhat for their determination in this. </confession>.
However, when you've gained power, the unwritten contract with the True Believers is that you will use that power to do Good Things.
In 2004, Wong was out of power, and was forced to vote for an immorality, in order that the ALP might gain power later. (mind you, they still had the unelectable #MarkLatham as leader ... pffft)
In 2024, with the ALP in power, the equation has changed. #FatimaPayman is helping the True Believers. Giving back to them a small reason to go out to the trenches again.
The ALP absolutely needs a Senator Payton every now and then. She is their only believable answer to the criticism that they are just the Shit-Lite Party™.
