  1. I’ve been going through old photos and this one packed a wallop for me. I reimagined the original photo as a painting before sharing it, but nothing could change what this moment means to me.
I was a teenager, proud of the Thanksgiving pie I’d made, while Dad finished carving the turkey behind me.
Over the years, this photo has come to mean so much more. It reminds me of how he was always there—steady, supportive, quick with a smile, and always ready to make me laugh. Those are the memories I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life. ❤️

Published in 2006 - Edited in 2026 “Come Mohandas, it is time for your interview with the doctor.” “Yes, coming.” Rishi, a young assistant, dressed in a freshly starched uniform walked ahead, as he led a tired old man, with balding head, thinly covered with greying hair, to the consulting rooms. At his soft knock, a deep voice from inside replied, “Come in.” “Sir, patient No. 33.” The square room was sparsely furnished. At the far end, there was a wooden table with two […]

  5. Father’s Day cut short

When I was on the train and the rain was passing, it provided hints of blue sky, I hoped it was an analogy for how our circumstances are changing with time.

Life at the moment is absolutely not how I want things to be, but I’m grateful our day wasn’t cancelled and I got to smell you and hear your wonderful voice.

When I got ready and had porridge and coffee in the morning, I saw neighbours across the road together in bed. I dreaded the long journey and dragging the buggy across rail replacement buses, plus a bag stuffed with your portable potty. I wished that our lives could be like the family across the road.

With patience, I’m trying to build something like it for us.

    Our day together

I received a message from your mum while the coach was setting off. My first thought was hoping you were a little late rather than our day being cancelled altogether. The message said you had a cold and she would want you to be back with her by 4. There was no room for seeing how the day went, only her usual obligatory tone.

I finally got to the shopping centre, 2 and a half hours after leaving home. The weather was much better. 10am passed so I waited at the corner to give me a view of the road into the distance. When you approached, I waved my arms and did a little dance to show how happy I was to see you on this special day.

I have a few options prepared for our time together. As it’s generally warmer, even with recent showers, the playground remains your favourite place to go. Most places are closed till later anyway.

After gaining a few wet patches on your bottom and building up an appetite we went for lunch. The Japanese restaurant is our trusty spot. I got us ramen, a chicken katsu, 2 gyozas and 2 octopus balls with sides of spring onions and soy sauce for dipping everything in. For the first time you chose to eat the takoyaki octopus balls. I even reminded you what you were eating and you carried on nibbling away. I hope we share these favourite dishes for the rest of our lives.

    Father’s Day kisses

I thought it would be good to finish lunch with fruits and further snacks from M&S. You helped me pick the items while easing into a snooze. It wasn’t long till we left the hustle and bustle and I did loops around back streets to avoid too much noise while you recharged. I used the opportunity to call my mum, creating a moment with a slight thread of connection between the 3 of us.

    Our afternoon

The rest of our day flashed by so quickly. The routine spots I like to make use of took up all the time, leaving nothing spare.

With my knowledge of the area and your habits, I could predict when you’d wake up and ensure it would be near The Cake Cafe which is also close to the playground.

This time we could enjoy the outdoor seating they set up across the road and have our babychino/coffee date with fruits from the supermarket.

As time passes during our time together, the feeling I get is hard to describe. Perhaps it’s like a pressure combined with sadness. The physical part being the result of the sadness. It’s because unlike the other families surrounding us, I can’t adjust our plans if you’re having fun or just go home if the weather’s looking bad.

I have no alternative than to take shelter at a museum or shops when it’s bad weather or when we’re having fun to cut it short. It all sets me up to fail.

    Early handover

When we make our way to the shopping centre, we chat a bit and that’s where you reveal that aunties Ellen and Jane have been with you. Ellen is obviously over from abroad for your other auntie’s wedding.

The fact is, today you weren’t behaving like you were unwell. You ran, jumped and giggled about normally.

Your mum has the power to say whatever she likes and will get the benefit of the doubt.

A harsh reminder as our day comes to an end, if she wants to keep you with her, any excuse will do.

The court order is unenforceable and her lies are effortless.

Next week I won’t see you because I agreed to swap the weekend so you could be the flower girl at your auntie’s wedding.

I’ll ask for a photo as I’m sure you’ll look the most beautiful there. I won’t hold my breath for it though.

  6. Another chilly day in River Town

We had such a lovely time last week that I hoped we could create again this Sunday as the court-mandated time would give us 2 extra hours! Enough to go from rushing in the afternoon to chillaxing, maybe getting a snack from a park side cafe and people-watch.

Aware that our day could be cancelled last minute, I made backup plans as it’s also marathon day and Julian is running it, he was the friend who gave you the Baby Shark toy you love so much! A few friends organised to go and cheer him on.

I wish things were better and your mum would be more cooperative so we could’ve gone together. It’s such a lovely atmosphere. We’ve been just the once which is something at least.

    Cuts to our day

On Friday your mum had fired the warning shot and informed me you had had a vaccine which could mean you become unwell. When your mum sends these messages it rarely results in nothing so I expected cancellation and again powerless to say or do much to regain our time.

On Saturday she told me you were off colour so our time would be cut back to 10 to 4. No flexibility just our time cut. It’s so frustrating that our tiny bit of time barely survives and each minute is another I’ll never get back. Your childhood is slipping from my fingers as your time as a baby did.

    Our day

I arrived ready with ideas and plans for our time together. You took a bit of time to get ready to head off with me, I patiently waited and avoided saying anything significant to minimise the chances of your mum being nasty once again. Once you were ready, perhaps triggered by the cold drizzle, we went into the shopping centre. You were cheery when we came across colourful novelty pens a bit like a sea urchin but rubbery and soft that made us laugh.

From my 10-5 plan I had researched other kids parks we could check out and just north there was one with a lovely boat and wooden equipment. I thought it would make a nice change and we headed there. It was brilliant albeit very quiet. It seemed most people were at church.

For lunch we went to a French restaurant where the staff were amazing. We were treated like royalty and the waitress thought you were the cutest. You had lots to eat and some other diners even came to tell me how sweet we were together. It warmed my heart. Moments like those might look effortless but I put so much thought and planning into making our time as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Still working on that smile, almost perfect

A small milestone to note is that you did a wee at a loo outside home, at the restaurant, for the first time. Very grown up! I’m very proud of my big girl.

    Flower picking

After lunch I wanted to get you to nap but spring’s presents everywhere were too tempting for you not to explore so we went around some pretty backstreets where you picked and sniffed at the flowerbeds with your green fingers. We also tried to get into a church’s garden, or graveyard, where it was bursting with life but it seemed closed. I think we’ll try again another time.

Let’s not tell the residents you picked their flowers!

Eventually you napped after I suggested it was a very long walk to the park. You tried to show me how you could walk quicker but I said it would still be too far. Almost seconds after tucking you in you nodded off leaning forwards so I had to shuffle your posture to a more appropriate position. As promised, I’d timed the walk so you could wake up near the park and with almost laser precision you woke up beside the coffee shop next to the park.

Trying to make the most out the rest of our time together

Upon awakening I asked you if you’d had a nice sleep to which you replied with a drunken smile. I’m pleased I got you to sleep, hopefully it will contribute towards a good afternoon for you and lots of dinner. I ordered you a babychino and took us around the corner to the kids park.

I tried really hard to get these basic things done within our time but even when things go perfectly smoothly there was still only 25 minutes or so available. It was a shame that there was only enough time for a nappy change, a few segments from the easy peelers I brought from the Big City and a walk back with some flower picking.

You seem to understand that because your mum doesn’t let me have you for more time, so we can’t do all the things we want. With time you’ll understand how painful it is to end our day outside in the cold rather than at home, in bed with snugs and kisses.

For our last moment I picked you up and gave you kisses while telling you how much I love you. I could see your mum’s bike and felt that at the least I’d given you a nice goodbye preempting that she would be full of inconvenience if I dared to linger once we arrived for the handover.

Those lost 2 hours are hard to reconcile.

  9. Father's Day has me thinking about those 1950s afternoons when my father walked me to Yankee Stadium and taught me that passion doesn't require conforming to expectations. While other fathers taught sons to slide into home plate, mine taught me to appreciate the art of base stealing. We created our own legend in the shadow of the House that Ruth Built.

  11. @emeryville, that's good advice. I looked on the website but couldn't see the price.

Instead, I walked through the race festivities while hiking with my daughter up through #StowLake . We went to the top of #StrawberryHill and enjoyed the view, and a nice #FatherDaughter moment.

  16. My dad and I are alike in so many things! We both love people, travelling, cultures, art, aesthetics, coffee shops, our quiet time in the morning, coffee! And so much more.

Unlike him, I cannot draw a line to save my life. But I am so blessed to be told and shown how proud he is of me and of all that I do - nonstop.

  18. When my daughter was a teen, she wanted a #pedicure, but had nobody to go with her. She joked that it would be fun if I went with her, so i called her bluff. It was awkward at first, but fun, and now it's become a regular father-daughter thing we do to spend time together when she comes home.

I'm glad I tried something new that day, embracing the awkwardness. It brings me closer to my daughter and I get gorgeous feet out of the deal.
