Not even a proper video call together

All the time we’re apart saddens me because I can do so little just to see you grow and have your personality take shape in my presence and with my care.

At the moment you’re in Greenlake, the place where your mum envisioned having a dual life with her first husband. Perhaps she wanted to move there and start the rest of her life or perhaps just spend time there sharing with her family back at home. Either way, those plans and ideas ended up in divorce and eventually meeting me. I can’t be certain what her intentions were when meeting me, whether it was to trick someone to have a baby and force the father out, or if it was actually an accident.

It feels so off that she would choose to spend her precious little time off as well as mark her first time abroad without her family to the source of so much acrimony and connections broken following her divorce.

So many people are away with their little ones to lovely warm spots where the kids can play in the pool and enjoy activities. That’s what I’d be doing with you right now if she didn’t try with so much force to exclude me from your life.

Today’s video call

I plan my time around our call, it’s the most important part of my week apart from the beautiful time we have together. As you’re in a different time zone I made double sure not to lose track and set an extra alarm on my phone and think about where I have good phone signal and a quiet space where we can properly hear each other.

Today at the court-assigned time, I joined the call to see your delightful face and you started enthusiastically telling me what you had for dinner. Your mum continues to hold the phone firmly in her hand making it difficult for us to interact. When you go out of frame I continue trying to interact, but your mum makes it as hard as possible. She interrupts me and cuts me off literally as I’m telling you I love you. This was one of our briefest calls yet.

The rest of the week

The rest of my week will feel incomplete. Our barely noticeable time is harshly cut by your mum and she doesn’t cooperate on other occasions to speak with you, let alone see you. At the least, it’s a Big City week this Sunday so you’ll be home with me – unless of course it’s cancelled. The message in a few days is as predictable as sunset.

This situation is so dire I’m completely lost about how to make it better. Any action I take will be twisted by your mum. I know that if I contact her asking for more time with you in any sense it will be misrepresented as harassment.

I wonder sometimes how you will come to understand this all in the future. Will you actually realise your mum would treat me like a monster for wanting to give you a kiss?

Right now I can’t even think anymore, my eyes are flooded with tears.
