The corporate social media platforms:
"We will stand up for your right to free speech... as long as it is speech that we like... and as long as it does not hurt our bottom line... and..."
I'm attaching a story about Facebook, but any social media platform with substantial business in India is likely to engage in this bullshit.
I'm not surprised. If a multinational has interests in multiple countries, it is going to look at its bottom line and privilege the ideology of the most regressive country.
This is yet another reason why the fediverse is superior. If India wants to police the servers within its borders, they can have at it. They cannot touch the servers abroad.

We are all equipped with #choice. I came here for the #conversation, spent 2 minutes in the #confrontation, learned about #block and #mute and here we are.
I think #guidance on happy use of the Fediverse makes sense. Ppl coming here after years on #Farcebook and #xitter (pronounced Shitter in deference to #president #Xi), have gotten used to being torn apart over an asterisk or a comma.
Here it takes a moment to realise those people aren't here. They are still on #shitter.
Many folks, me included, didn't even know there was a word for #ablism for example. I do now and try to keep it in mind, simply because #someone pointed out of to me.
These #discussions can become the core of what the #Fediverse is so about.

Every now and then I want to @mention someone I know, who I remember interacting with here at some point, but I can't remember their fediverse address. Every time I try, I remember the existing #fediverse apps aren't good at helping me distinguishing my friends from the random strangers I've casually chatted with here.
This is why we're nowhere near ready to replace FarceBook. Although I'm hopeful that newer projects like Bonfire might get us closer...

I doubt I'm the first person to mention this here, but it's finally happened; Goggle has imposed a storage quota of 15GB on gratis accounts. So one of the biggest advantages of using their services without paying - eternal, unlimited storage - is now toast. Could FarceBook be next? I wonder if this might be an opportunity for platform cooperatives to pitch modestly-priced services as a replacement for both?
