All day I watched 100s of similar examples of #French citizens tired of watching the #Gironde #fire news, coming from all over #France to support firefighters, local inhabitants & businesses, animals... the scale of #solidarity I believe is the largest post-war. In a society that's so divided, not least because of the #farright & the plutocrats enabled by #Macron, it is nothing short of a miracle 🇫🇷❤️. May we keep such #organising even in times of respite, a luta continua✊🏽!

During an emergency, people searching for relatives and friends need reliable access to timely official information, not dependence on a platform controlled by a dangerous far-right billionaire. Public authorities must do better.

The rise of Youtube “street content”
I wrote in April about Knockout Audit: a strange mix of urban exploration, traditional auditing, nightlife content and vigilantism which I suspected would rapidly grow. I just stumbled across this piece from an agency website documenting how it has grown over recent months:
By the end of July the channel has 261,000 subscribers, suggesting that growth is accelerating, in part because Elon Musk picked up on one of the recent videos. The author observes that each video is getting on average 330,000 views, suggesting that content is being circulated by the algorithm widely beyond the core group of subscribers. Given these videos are mostly shot in Manchester and northern towns, it’s a lot of visibility for what might once have languished as a regional phenomenon. It’s striking if you watch the videos how often he meets people on the street who recognise him. He is clearly extremely visible amongst young men in the north-west. They offer an interesting account of where this might go next:
Genres like this tend to follow a pattern: an explosive land-grab, a wave of imitators, then a reckoning — platform policy changes, advertiser nerves, or public backlash that forces the format to mature or fragment. Knockout Audit is currently in the land-grab phase, and the CreatorDB trajectory suggests he hasn’t peaked. The interesting question is whether the breakout creators can broaden — into commentary, longer-form documentary, brand work — before the genre’s controversies catch up with it.

They were actively intervening in apparent instances of street harassment in ways that were deeply racialised. I suspect their turn away from this, as well as spending less tine in Manchester, comes from recognising the legal risks they were increasingly flirting with. But the success of the genre suggests we are liable to see imitators picking up the format without the same nerves creeping in.
