CW: Super Smash Bros Fanfic Rec, Sonic x Zelda (T-rated)

Rating: TThis rec is specifically for the first chapter of this fic! I can't speak much to my thoughts on Zelda's characterization, as I'm rather rusty on LoZ, but Sonic felt so in character here!
The fic starts with him sitting on a rooftop watching the sunrise as he listens to the radio (Referencing his penchant for chilling on rooftops in Sonic X!). Zelda somehow knows to find him up there, and he chats with her while trying not to be too obvious about his crush on her, even as she seems more aware of it than he hoped...
The fic gives a nice, atmospheric overview of the setting and the basic premise of Smash in the beginning, so it can also be read fandom-blind. The author even included the name of the jazz song Sonic and Zelda are listening to! (I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the genre prior)
A lot of fans see Sonic as a hyperactive character who is very flirty with his love interests. While I can see that in spin-off media like the films or Western shows, that’s not how he acts in the games. Besides, I find it so much more interesting when a normally confident character has difficulty showing their messier feelings, and this fic really nailed that side of Sonic.
I was bracing myself for him to be aggressively forward towards Zelda, but I loved his shyness even as he tried to put up a casual front around her. I highly recommend this if you also like this interpretation of Sonic!
Note: I only read up to the Sonic x Zelda portion in the first chapter, but there's another section in the first chapter featuring Lucina/Palutena as a pairing. Though the Sonzelda portion felt self-contained, and the ending was satisfying on its own!

A Night at Sea by WiEGoP

Category: Romance & FamilyAn adorable one-shot centered on Alana and Seaspray's relationship post-Sea Change. Alana reflects on her relationship with Seaspray, and their place in Tlalakan society due to the nature of their bond. But a decent chunk of the fic is just Seaspray being an big awkward sweetheart around her, and it's soo endearing.
One of the reasons why I adore Cybertronian x human relationships is because of the tender care the robots have to show towards their human partners in things other couples wouldn't think twice about. This fic leans into that so well, and doesn't shy away from depicting their differences, while also showing them being...comfortable, and trusting of those differences.
And best of all? Seaspray stays in robot mode the whole time! :blobcataww: Not once does he transform into his organic form! Just gentle robot cuddles all around! :bigblobhajhug:

Transformers G1/IDW Fanfic Rec
Not good enough by SpinoGuy

Category: Drama (Gen)An angsty Rodimus Prime-centered fic, in which he does what he can to make amends regardless of risk to himself. This was a heartbreaking read in the best way imaginable.
The fic borrows elements from IDW and G1, and while the IDW elements were well-integrated, what really spoke to me was how the flaws of his G1 self are highlighted. He is so, so good, but he barely gives himself any credit. He's not just a good leader, but a good person, even if it might run against better judgment. His inadequacy, recklessness, selflessness—they all shine through here.
The other characters felt fleshed out and real as well, and you could see a glimpse of the world continuing to spin, proverbially, in spite of the tragedies faced. If you like Rodimus even a little, I highly reccommend giving this gem a read!

I'm also feeling a tiny bit awkward because I just recently reread New Big Feels by @agoodboysforeverhole, and it's the only thing I can think of every time our brunch + horses plans get mentioned.

Transformers One Fanfic Rec
In Spite of It. by Gigzmcgeezie
A postwar fic told from Megatron's perspective. He and Optimus watch the sky from the place where the former betrayed the latter, and they reflect on their long war.
A simple enough premise―but it's executed masterfully. The author nailed Megatron's character, even weaving in elements from other continuities, such as his penchant for poetry in IDW. His banter with Optimus, the way he shifts between poetic and snarky, is excellent.
While the authorial intent appears to be to ship them (MegOp is tagged), it can also be enjoyed in a platonic way. Even after supposed millennia of war, their interactions feel like their old selves have met each other again, and it’s absolutely beautiful.

Category: GenMetal Sonic tries to replace Sonic yet again, but this time he has something new in his arsenal—Sonic's voice. Normally I prefer him mute so I can decide my own interpretation of which gears are turning in the loathsome copy's head, but here, it serves the story incredibly well as he tells Sonic exactly why he wants him dead.
The fight scenes are well-written, Sonic's banter with Metal is impeccable, and the angst? Gut-wrenching.
I'm huge fan of Metal Sonic, and this fic really does his character justice. Cannot recommend enough! @greyliliy

Memories - Shadaria AU by twisting-echo
(Fic contains references to substance abuse, so bear it in mind!)
A Victorian AU fic centering on Shadow's obsession with his lost love, through commissioning paintings. I can't say much more without spoiling the plot, as it's written differently from most fanwork—consisting entirely of narration and description—but I think the style serves the story well, making it feel almost like a fairy tale!
Even little details in the prose wording made it feel more authentic to the time period—turns of phrase like "He turned to the bottle" to describe him attempting to drink away his misery. I can tell a lot of effort went into this, and I loved it.
Full disclosure, I don't even ship these two, but this was so beautifully written, and pulled straight at my heartstrings. :blobhaj_tiny_hearts:

Category: GenThis fic punched me in the gut, then picked me up and gave me a mug of hot cocoa. It is a 'holiday special' in the sense that it focuses on Shadow and his complicated relationship with Christmas due to its connection with Maria, but he isn't portrayed as a stick in the mud who needs to give in to the holiday spirit, which I found so refreshing.
He finds unexpected comfort in the company of Vanilla and Cream, and it doesn't involve them 'getting him into the holiday spirit'. Their interactions felt genuine, not like a rehash of the standard Christmas special, and I admire that.

I don't want to give too much away, but I will say that Sonic and Shadow's interactions felt very funny and in character, and the relationship between Elise and Sabrina was endearing as well, in spite of the author having nothing in canon to draw on for it.
Plus the multiple ship teases between Sonic and Elise, even though they never actually interact in the fic. :ablobcatheartsqueeze: I've never seen a fic pull that off before with a pairing!
