For a more in depth analysis of the constitutional legacy of the Famous 5, check out this vintage episode of Alberta Unbound. https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/s3-episode-7-2022-leitch-lecture-part-1-planting-a/id1511810939?i=1000557355398 #PersonsDay #PersonsCase #AlbertaUnbound #ualberta #ucalgary #Famous5 #eugenics #cdnpoli

Happy Persons Day! Here’s my annual reminder of the complicated legal and moral legacy of the Famous 5 - a video I shot during the “high COVID” times of 2020. (Hence the outdoor mask and the very uncut hair.) But I don’t think the message is at all out of date. https://youtu.be/a_HhQP3HoxU?si=3SxCTSwsCH6_O9ly #SenateofCanada #PersonsDay #Famous5 #Alberta #FamousFive #Vriend #LGBQT

I shocked some Senate colleagues, with my speech about the dark history of the eugenics movement in Alberta. Vitally important context, to our debate on Bill S-250, a bill sponsored by my Senate colleague Yvonne Boyer, a Metis human rights lawyer who has spent years drawing attention to the issue of non-consensual sterilization of Indigenous women in Canada. https://youtu.be/DXYdhZ1ZqdY?si=Wu5k7Epl3WHQm0x3 #eugenics #cdnpoli #SenateofCanada #Alberta #Canada #ableg #abpoli #Famous5

Aha. I just counted. Our current Senate gender split, at least by my unofficial reckoning, is 42 men and 48 women, for a total of 90/105. Since we have two more retirements this week, we’ll soon be at 88/105…but the gender split then will be 41 v 47. Hard to believe that the first woman wasn’t appointed to the Senate until 1930…because women weren’t considered legal persons. #Canada #SenateofCanada #cdnpoli #Famous5 #SenCA
