Spent Saturday and Sunday with my brother milling white ash into the parts needed for a new staircase. It’s a full-family project as the ash came from my wife’s family bush lot. The stairs are for our new home on the property where my wife’s grandparents lived from the 1940s on. My children are the fourth generation to have called it home.

So, if anyone is having #StickerShock from #AncestryCom price increases, I would advise downloading your GEDCOM file, then find another service. I would also advise downloading any photos and important records as well. Making people pay just to preserve their trees is extortion, imho. I have links to Windows software, but if anyone knows of a free Mac OS GEDCOM editor, please let me know. Most of the Mac ones seem to be paid software.

Reminded by University Challenge’s question about the Great Cause and who would get the Scottish crown in the 13th century. My class studied this early in secondary school in Hawick, drawing up family trees. Personally I love to read posts that make the individuals come to life on the page, rather than a list of names and dates. The more that person becomes real, the more fascinating they become. I suspect we all grow attached to people to whom we are not related, simply by researching them for someone else’s tree.
