Does anyone have any insight on proving estrangement from a parent? Or the situations where that may be necessary?

Short backstory: my mother is very mentally ill and continues to refuse help. I worry she'll end up in a facility full time without the means to pay for it. I'm in Wisconsin and from my very basic research, it seems like I'm in a state that won't force me to take responsibility, but I'd rather be safe than sorry, ya know?
