  2. You may have guessed it already: Sea curtains in #Antarctica cannot be a long-term solution to prevent loss & damage caused by ice melt and sea-level rise. Only curbing emissions can be! It's like taking an aspirin for tooth cavities—it won't save you from seeing a dentist, nor does it fix the cause.

  3. #PostCapitalism

For decades leftists have cheerfully called some especially troublesome developments in our society #LateStageCapitalism or post capitalism - acting like those developments were a sign that capitalism has run its course and we'd be freed from it soon.

I never understood that, as the natural successor to (hyper) capitalism is fascism, not socialism.
I wish I had been wrong.

  4. Mr Sycamore is molting today. Lots of papery bark at his feet as he sheds last year’s coat.

Sun rises golden yellow as we look from a new vantage point outside the fence. Rocky was eating while I schlepped the bins.

The third image looks down the side street from our gate. We’re looking just to the south of the sunrise.

The fourth image looks down the street toward the west. The rising sun is illuminating the clouds from the side giving the image shown here.

  6. CW: On doomerism, climate change

I sometimes hear or read, the claim that doomerism is a problem (especially related to climate change). I partially agree that it is a sentiment that can lead some people to do be less engaged in making meaningfull change. But I think it is more important to be careful when claiming another person's statement is doomerism, because things that can seems like doomerism, are often the antidote of a sentiment that is a far bigger problem than doomerism, namely false hope or false optimism.

What I mean by false hope, is the belief that everything is going to be alright, even without significant change to the structures that are causing the problems. An example of this is Green Growth, the belief that the best way to solve climate change is continuous economic growth (as measure by GDP), while directing the production and infrastructure to more sustainable technologies (e.i. renewable energy and electrical vehicles). Green Growth is a false hope, since it is unrealistic that maintaining the global growth based economic system can lead to a sustainable economy fast enough to limit climate change to a level that will not lead to a global economic and social colapse.

Dismissing a false hope, is not that same a dismissing hope. On the contrary, what gives me hope is that more and more people is lossing hope in our current system. In order for radical change to happen, more people need to be motivate to have radical change. False hopes are what allowing people to feel save and contented with the current system, and dismiss the need for radical change. Therefore I say, let us lose false hope so the future can be hopefull.

And next time see something that seems like doomerism, ask if they are lossing hope in the current system, or lossing hope in general.

  7. "My Secret to Success"

    I think I can—that’s all that counts.
As long as I pour every ounce
Of being into my blind belief
    Despite reality, the chief
    Concern is not how competent
I am or even my intent,
But rather whether I’ve thrown out
Every last shred of reasonable doubt.

  8. “The Ephebians believed that every man should have the vote (provided that he wasn't poor, foreign, nor disqualified by reason of being mad, frivolous, or a woman). Every five years someone was elected to be Tyrant, provided he could prove that he was honest, intelligent, sensible, and trustworthy. Immediately after he was elected, of course, it was obvious to everyone that he was a criminal madman and totally out of touch…”

A lot of commentators do that at the end of a really depressing interview. At first we thought they meant it, "I see a lot of promise in the next generation. Many I talk to <ANECDOTE>". Its a fast, easy way to end on something that feels positive.

We think it often just creates #falseHope. Many young people are confused and distracted.

Part of it is likely #behaviourChange language and #suggestion to guide the young listener. "I'm young, I can <ANECDOTE>". Its still dishonest, though.
