It's fallow deer breeding season on our place, and they're keen for a punch up. Unfortunately for the big chocolate fellow here, his day ended early as part of our conservation and control efforts.
Older animals need to be taken out of the gene pool so that younger animals get opportunities to breed, and as they are an invasive species, we need to put some effort into control and reduction in numbers.

This boofhead decided to ignore its mama calling and camp in our front garden this morning. Its family group move through our front yard early most days.
It’ll reunite with the group later, but right now it’s being recalcitrant.

Zoals beloofd, nadat de edelherten die in de avondzon aan het bunkeren waren verjaagd waren zag ik nog een damhert en later meer. Deze heb ik ook nog even gefilmd. Je ziet dat ze nog niet zover zijn met het opzetten van een gewei. Een aantal ligt te slapen/dommelen en de rest ligt relaxed te herkauwen.
NB dit is niet in een hertenkamp, het hek is alleen om wilde zwijnen te weren, de damherten kunnen de hele Veluwe overzwerven.

A family group of fallow deer were near our dam as I arrived home from #RFS training. I count two does with December fawns at heel, a yearling doe, and a yearling buck, who has managed to grow a single spike antler at the end of his first year. He'll be off with the big boys next year.
For many reasons, some people don't like them. While I acknowledge them as an introduced species that can be a pest presence, we don't have so many here as to cause damage. I feel fortunate to have them so close, alongside our native fauna.

This unit was hanging out at my back fence this morning. He was spectacular - thick through the chest, a big wide rack with great balance, and menil colouring. As soon as he picked me up moving *inside the house* he made off.
There was another big buck and a doe about 30m further away.

One of two fallow deer bucks coming into antler that were about 20m off our back fence this morning. I didn't have time to get decent shots before they moved down the hill behind them. Hopefully, they'll be back in the next couple of days.

Did you know fallow deer come in a wide variety of colors? They’re best known as having a brownish body with checkered white spots, but can range from black to white. I photographed this buck on a rainy day in the dunes.
Fallow deer are technically a non-native species in Western Europe. They were introduced from Turkey by the Romans almost 2000 years ago.
