  1. One of several, bright yellow #wallflowers started blooming this week. These are under our large cedar tree - in a well mulched rock garden bed. It was delightful to see their flowers emerge again. Most of our other wallflowers bloomed all through Summer & stopped in October. They smell amazing!

  2. This is the final pink #cosmos bloom of 2025.

I was quite impressed with how long they held on, refusing to stop blooming, after several big rain/wind storms & temperatures dropping. I appreciated these flowers, when almost all other plants ceased to produce flowers.

  3. We grow 3 different coloured #snapdragons - these red ones, white & yellow ones too. We have more of the reds than the other two. Like pansies - snapdragons are hella resilient flowering plants. When well mulched, they survive & produce blooms in midst of Winter - defying snow & ice conditions.

Snapdragons started being cultivated by gardeners in the 15th century.

  4. Fernwood Community Centre is one of several local community centres which have put in free food & pollinator gardens outside their grounds. It's wonderful to have more edible gardens all around our communities 🙂
Fernwood Community organization also stewards a small community orchard.

  5. #PacificAster is one of my fave #NativePlants to use for #rewilding & for attracting more #pollinators.

It's a small, hardy, beautiful purple #NativeWildflower which is found from BC to California. It's tolerant of many different coastal habitats, from ocean sand dunes to rocky outcrops to salt marshes to grasslands to forests. Great plant to use for soil erosion & slopes stabilization work. It has a deep, clumpy, extensive fibrous root system - don't grow beside plants with weaker root systems.

Pacific aster is extremely easy to grow in it's native grow zones, across coastal PNW areas. You'll love their long bloom time, from late May into late October. It provides pollen sources for pollinators in Fall. After they stop blooming, they'll produce fluffy seed heads, full of prolific wind-born #seeds. Snip off tops of seed heads to save them. I store mine in airtight jars & share a lot of them too.
