  3. Moreso than 2024, there's a bit of intrigue in the UK Christmas Number One race this year. Reissues to boost physical sales, charity singles, smart speaker collabs, and George Michael's annual adventure in cardiac transplantation.

  6. Aw, this is a very cute video! Thanks to @Homestead for sharing!

I love Fairytale of New York, but always felt a bit uncomfortable with the homophobic slur. Very grateful to Grace Petrie for providing a version with an alternative line: youtu.be/cBwqjwB6Skk?si=rcPO0L

(also the pandemic-era video is very nostalgic in all the right ways)

  7. Fairytale of New York is allegedly the result of a bet. Pogues producer Elvis Costello bet Shane MacGowan and co-writer Jem Finer, the band’s banjoist, that they couldn’t come up with a Christmas record that wasn’t slushy.

10 things you might not know about Fairytale of New York.

  8. The #Pogues’ #FairytaleOfNewYork is “as intimate and uneasy as hearing an argument through thin walls, and yet it’s epic, too, conjuring the snowbound canyon-streets of Manhattan.” nytimes.com/2023/12/24/opinion

  9. If you’re not singing heartedly in a crowd the songs Last Christmas or Fairytale Of New York you’re not doing Christmas right. 🎼🎵”a crowded room, friends with tired eyes🎶🎸🎄🌨️☃️
I'm hiding from you and your soul of ice.” #LastChristmas #FairytaleOfNewYork

  10. Now #BBCRadio1 are playing the "you're cheap.and you're haggard" version of #FairyTaleOfNewYork, I find it interesting that they blank out "slut" but not "junk". Apparently sex is worse than heroin?

  12. I’ve been listening to the #Pogues’ #FairytaleOfNewYork more or less on repeat the past few days. Happy Christmas, you bums, punks, and drunks.

  13. All the outrage about ‘faggot’ in Fairytale of New York seems to gloss over the line ‘Old slut on junk’. The protagonists of this story are not nice people and it feels like the language used is the language they *would* use. It’s not MacGowan’s fault that it took on a life he never expected it would have. It was written as the antithesis of the ‘played every year’ song it’s become. It’s become a bit of a ‘how right on are you?’ test every year - which is a shame as it is a great song and I think if you bowdlerise it too much it loses its impact and just becomes seasonal wallpaper… #FairyTaleOfNewYork #ThePogues #KirstyMacColl

  14. The Pogues and MacColl seldom performed the song live. Here's one rendition from St. Patrick's Day in 1988 (note: the f-slur is used during this performance).

  15. The death of Shane MacGowan just before the holidays has led to lots of airplay for his classic Christmas tune, "Fairytale of New York," a duet between The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl. For Consequence, Jonah Krueger examines the appeal of the song, including how MacGowan justified the use of the f-slur.

  16. As the UK media outrage machine limbers up, lemme remind you that #FairyTaleOfNewYork by the #Pogues has always had its language censored since the 1980s for radio; and that Kirsty MacColl had no issues recording an alt that excluded the f-slur for wide use. This #censorship debate has come up every year since 2017 because it generates outrage clicks about #woke - all because some of us would like a little consideration (eg the str8s not gleefully belting that word out every Christmas karaoke).

  17. CW: Homophobia in Fairytale of New York

Can every #radio station thinking of playing #FairytaleOfNewYork this #Christmas morning please just… not?

Even the one without the homophobic slur in the lyrics?

It is deeply unpleasant to have to stand in the family kitchen waiting to see whether the radio is about to scream FAGGOT at #ChristmasDay radio volumes.

Maybe we could not do that?
