4 A Gallery of Night: Mira filled an entire sketchbook with moonlit paintings, each page glowing faintly if held up to real moonlight later. She decided daytime colors were nice, but nighttime had its own kind of magic.

3 Painting by Night: Under moonlight, Mira's brushstrokes shimmered faintly silver on the paper, turning ordinary trees and rooftops into something soft, mysterious, and quietly magical.

2 A Silver Discovery: One full-moon night, unable to sleep, Mira noticed moonlight pooling like liquid silver on her windowsill. On impulse, she dipped her smallest brush directly into the glow.

The Girl Who Painted with Moonlight

1 Ordinary Paint, Ordinary Pictures: Mira loved to paint, but her daytime pictures always looked flat and dull, no matter how many colors she mixed on her little wooden palette.

4 First in Line: Rubbing his nose, Bramble shuffled out of his den to find the berry bushes just beginning to bloom. For the first time ever, he had first pick - and he saved the biggest berry for the woodpecker.

3 The Big Bonk: Months later, right on cue, a warm gust shook the branch. The pinecone tumbled down and bonked Bramble squarely on the nose, jolting him awake at the very first hint of spring.

2 The Pinecone Plan: A clever woodpecker suggested tying a pinecone to a branch just above Bramble's den entrance, rigged so the first warm breeze of spring would knock it loose and drop it on his nose.

1 One Winter Too Long: Bramble the bear always slept through the first weeks of spring, missing the best berries every single year. His friends were tired of saving him a smaller and smaller share.

Maar ik heb zelf niets met sprookjesfiguren.
Dus ik voel niet de behoefte om er naartoe te gaan.

3 An Unlikely Customer: One rainy afternoon, a tired traveler wandered in, drawn not by shine but by the odd, warbling whistle drifting from the back shelf - it reminded him of an old song from home.

  17. The House of Despair

    1
    That corner of the yard
    Where the neighbors tree
    Invades with its tendrils
    Having established a
    Tenancy of years to
    patiently engineer its
    hold in the mortar of
    the walls.

    2
    We keep to the path,
    In our cowardly shoes,
    We dance on our toes
    afraid our feet may land
In a faery circle and freeze
Turning to stone, for a decade.
    Are we the invaders, whose
    fears grow as hyphae forming
the food of the gods, and the
    formula for despair.

    3
while our new house grows up
Around its papery bones of plywood
stucco and drywall stapled and glued
    together. We’ve added crown molding
and the external frame smells like faint
minty green paint. I stand back at the
curbside and look at it, imaging I can
smell a whiff of sweetbread in aspic,
but it’s really gingerbread and the
    marrow of misbehaved kids.

Love the way they made book covers in 1898. I haven't read all these stories so I don't know if the cover is illustrating a fairy tale. I love this demon flying over the wonderful city at night.

  35. As an anthropologist (as a folklorist) I am far more interested in noticing, treasuring, and finding beauty in things than in accomplishing any particular goal. As an anthropologist (as a strategist) I have the skill set for goals. And as an anthropologist (as an analyst) I do love to articulate a deeper meaning, to pull things apart and weave them back together. But from childhood, reading fairy tales (oral tradition, folklore), what nourished me was the inarticulable, the mystery, the don't-try-to-explain-this, the self-evident depth or paradox, the "it is" or "t'was thus."

Long before I was an anthropologist I considered myself an archivist. From childhood I collected material culture embodying meaning, from my life and from those around me: I considered it a contribution, to preserve things of meaning for others. And literally, what is archiving but treasuring?

    I long to treasure everything. #folklore #anthropology #oralTradition #academicChatter #fairytales #archiving

  36. I mean, think about it; the emperor from China that favours the golden fake bird above the real nightingale, the pig farmer, a prince in real life, posing, to find out a princess really wants him or just his money, the girl with the firesticks dies, because that is what happens, people! The little mermaid dies too because of course her prince likes her, but he will marry a princess that is rich of course. It goes on. This man is all about keeping it real. A delight! #fairytales #Andersen

  37. Third toot on reading the Hans Christian Andersen orgininals to my five year old: having a blast, really. Andersen really, really, hates everything and everyone that is fake and hates society. Tonight was The emperor's new clothes. Several times, several, it said: 'Because it wasn't there.' He really has to say it, cannot hold himself back. Such fun. You hear him say: 'Because it wasn't fucking there!' #fairytales
