We are one of the world’s biggest gas exporters, yet the federal government collects more from taxing beer drinkers than from the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax on offshore gas. Ordinary Australians pay more for a slab than multinationals pay for extracting our shared resources. If that is not a broken system, what is? Time for a proper inquiry and a fair return to the public.

It's like VAT, but the state fines VLOPs (very large online platforms: https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/dsa-vlops ) a fixed fee every time someone abuses their platform to perform criminal acts (hate speech, CSAM, etc). The VLOP gets the fine back when the illegal content & the user account are removed.

Gas companies are pulling in massive profits while Australians are stuck with soaring energy bills. A 25% export tax is hardly radical. These resources belong to the public, not just overseas shareholders.
That revenue could go straight into cost of living relief, renewables, and a more balanced energy system. The “sovereign risk” line is tired. They’ve benefited from generous settings for years.

No more letting overseas billionaires and corporations profit off our resources while Australian workers and families foot the bill for hospitals, schools and infrastructure.

Finally, someone’s making foreign investors pay their fair share on Australian land and resources. Chalmers’ move to close loopholes in the 30% CGT on property-related assets — even retrospectively — is spot on. These multinationals have been getting our gas basically for free, raking in $100b+ windfall profits from global crises while Aussies cop skyrocketing fuel bills, a housing emergency, and shredded social supports.
$17b a year could actually fund energy rebates, proper income support, housing, health, and renewables — instead of subsidising fossil fuel exec bonuses. Even One Nation and some Libs are open to it. The Albanese government should listen to ACOSS, the unions, the Greens, and the overwhelming majority of Australians. Tax the gas barons, help people doing it toughest. No more free ride for foreign multinationals on our resources.
