  1. People insisting it's normal to do work for a company without being paid for it is just wild to me. People literally arguing against their own interests out of pure ignorance.

    In the US this is covered by the #FairLaborStandardsAct (#FLSA) which is extremely simple when defining what's considered on-the-job work. If it is mandatory, work-related, and for the benefit of the company, then it is on-the-job work and you should be paid for the time.

    Coordinating with IT on what device they're going to ship you? That's on-the-job work.

    Driving to a job site that is not your main office? That's on-the-job work.

    Meeting with a client for lunch to discuss your latest deliverable? That's on-the-job work.
