Available now to teachers everywhere and developed in Ontario Canada.
A Fair Vote? Rights, Responsibilities, and Decision-Making in a Democracy is an exciting new resource for Grade 5 Social Studies teachers, which was developed by the Elementary Teachers of Toronto and Fair Vote Canada.
This resource supports Strand B of the Social Studies curriculum on the Role of Government and Responsible Citizenship. The curriculum resource invites students to consider alternatives to our First-Past-the-Post voting system. Consisting of three lessons with accompanying slideshows, it concludes with students holding a mock Citizens' Assembly to determine what changes could be made to our voting system.

@SnowyCA Capitulation Carney strikes again! This guy sure knows how to jettison all those strategic votes from the left.
#Carney is openly handing the next election to the #Conservatives having helped pave way for their authoritarian fascist rule by embracing austerity.
Strategic voting in #Canada is a joke, just like the entire FPTP voting system. Without voting reform, Canada is doomed to follow #Poilievre into facism while continuing to isolate and vilify the left.
Not my Canada, not my Prime Minister.

Now is the time to speak up! Although Justin Trudeau broke his often-repeated promise to Canadians that the 2015 election would be the last under the first-past-the-post system, there is still strong support for the idea – even among those in power. After stepping down as Liberal leader, Trudeau shared that his one regret leading up to the 2025 election was not being able to change the way we elect our governments in this country 1 . Mark Carney has also spoken positively about electoral reform and has shared openness to addressing “those more structural issues in our democracy” 2 .
We are rallying to show that Canadians from across the political spectrum have not forgotten this broken promise, and that now is the time to act. More than ever, we need a strong democracy, with elected officials who reflect the will of the people, and where every citizen’s vote counts equally. We hope that you will join us!
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out, anytime.
Thank you,

This piece articulates the advantages of ranked choice voting (one kind of proportional representation) far more clearly than I could.
"But while RCV might be strictly non-partisan, it is decidedly pro-voter – and almost always produces a more positive, issue-focused campaign that looks to drive up turnout and appeal to as many people as possible. A ranked-choice campaign rewards engagement and encourages coalitions; it’s a race where instead of tearing down opponents, candidates point out areas of agreement and ask to be a voter’s second choice.
Voters love RCV and find it easy to use. According to a new SurveyUSA poll of New York voters, 96% said their ballot was easy to fill out. More than three-quarters of voters want to keep or expand RCV. And 82% said they had taken advantage of RCV and ranked at least two candidates. (These numbers are similar across RCV elections, and a powerful rejoinder to critics who insist, despite evidence to the contrary, that it’s too confusing.)"

I unsubscribed on July 2nd from #cbcgem after watching #CBC air unedited feeds of #Trump’s propaganda as well as highlighting an #Alberta #separatist on #canadaday.
I also don’t appreciate CBC’s decision to withhold all comments on their #YouTube uploads. Comments help hold up-loaders accountable for bad takes.
Much like CBC’s featured disillusioned #Albertan, I too didn’t celebrate Canada Day this year, as the Prime Minister I was forced to strategically vote for is now fast tracking bills I don’t support while simultaneously capitulating to Trump.
Mark Carney is also openly supportive of yet another Liberal, federally forced, destructive bitumen pipeline across Northern BC against our province’s consent and ignoring our first nation’s rejection under the guise of “National Interest”, simply to appease a separatist Premier’s threats and fund Trump’s golden dome. This is not my #Canada, this is not my Prime Minister.

It's interesting that we were all expecting a Liberal majority, given the polls prior to the election.
One thing that was correctly predicted was the collapse of the NDP. I still voted for them, since I feel their policy offerings were the best of the lot, but no denying they collapsed. Bloc & Green votes also shrank, leading to the 2-party result of LPC centre right vs CPC right wing.
Quite a choice: tax cuts & austerity & pipelines vs tax cuts & austerity & pipelines.
The CPC did better than was expected. Ultimately, if we don't adopt a more proportional system, they will win unfettered power with a false majority at some point in the future (likely next election). Basically we're following the same path as the USA.
That said, I saw Fair Vote's call for the NDP MPs to make PR a condition of support. I might have sympathy for Fair Vote's call if they had endorsed the NDP during the election, since the NDP did commit to PR in the last election. But Fair Vote didn't. So to now set the stage for further derision of the NDP by making a hugely impractical demand strikes me as a bit much (and I am a paid supporter of Fair Vote).

#FairVoteCanada should be a priority for any party who wants politics to be more constructive.

@rorystarr @tezoatlipoca @fairvote.ca
Lol, concentration of votes matters, for sure.
Federalist parties in Canada, however, are also opposed to proportional representation because not only did the Bloc gain more seats than its votes under #fptp, under a #PR system, they would likely get even more seats, as people would be less reluctant to vote Bloc, this increasing the risk of another independence referendum.

@evan I think the big story, here, is how Canada has degenerated into the FPTP's inevitable two-party system.

Ignore false claims #ProportionalRepresentation (a term used to refer to systems that have nothing in common other than fitting a very specific mathematical formula) will solve problems.

https://www.fairvote.ca/board-election-2025/ Today is the last day to nominate yourself or someone else to serve on the board of directors for #fairvotecanada. I’m a newbie to the organization but I’ve thrown my name in anyway. I’d be honoured to represent the NWT.

I did not expect Germany's scary vote to be put in a positive light, but fairvote.ca makes a pretty good case for it as an example of the virtues of proportional representation.

I think #FairVoteCanada needs to be more militant. With respect, perhaps I don't know enough about their communication strategy but from presentations that I have attended it appears they try to engage political leaders in a cooperative fashion. I think they need to be more blunt. "If you don't support electoral reform, you don't support democracy". "If you don't push for proportional representation NOW, then you risk putting the country in the wrong hands" .
#CanPoli #ElectoralReform -
We also have to raise the issue in the media. Perhaps an organized campaign of Letters to the Editor, citing some of the statistics from #FairVoteCanada that show high levels of support for proportional representation and demanding more articles covering the topic. Anytime your see a survey on anything related to elections or policy importance, respond with "electoral reform should be #1".
