What do dwarves make ale from? Imported grain would drive up costs (yields from growing grain underground or on mountains can be disappointing). Although fermentation might be easier in a cave. Can ale be made from mushrooms, lichen, or other fungi? Do dwarf brewers keep their "secret ingredient" a mystery to avoid driving off squeamish customers? Possible answers are obviously setting dependent.

Unused campaign idea: For AD&D 1st edition. The players all create name level characters. They find a Deck of Many Things and a Ring of Wishes on their first adventure. The rest of the campaign is dealing with the fall out.

Medieval English paid their rents with smoked eels. Such payments were increasingly replaced by currency starting in the 13th century, but it continued into the 17th.
