Which protective glasses do you use for watching (partial) solar eclipses?

As a kid I just used charred pieces of glass. Yeah, someone asked me what I was doing with a lit candle outside during the day. I resisted replying "Looking for an honest man". Do not do that! I'm lucky to have eyes still.

In August 1999, on a bus tour to Hungary to watch the (total) solar eclipse, we were given some kind of cardboard "eclipse glasses" with a dark foil "lenses" to use before and after the totality.

Afterwards I read that it needs to be at least DIN 14 welding filter and that those probably weren't protecting our eyes.

So which welding glasses should I buy? The eclipse is in August, but I expect shortage, so I want to get them soon.

Me? "she'll be right", so sometimes. 🤔

Dad's partner's rellie just lost an eye when his woodworking lathe "exploded" - spinny bits flew into his face, breaking bones & destroying the eye. Experienced & competent, but not wearing the safety glasses *he owns*. "This'll only be quick..."

I'm doing lots of spinny tool stuff. Cutting rocks. Stuff flies out all the time. I'm going to buy face protection... and use it!

Are you aware that you can get prescription swim goggles? That sealed eye protection might be what is needed to protect against an airborne virus that inflects the eyes?

Repeated rolling of a many-sided dice is the image I'm getting.
And finding some comfort in.
And seeing how #IAQ, #masking of infected and non-infected and #EyeProtection of non-infected would improve the odds.

Will be a situation that many will find their family in over the next little while.
