  1. Here's another #EyePath case. This time, it's an orbital biopsy with a classic appearance - the kind of thing you might see in an exam 😉

  11. Here's some conjunctiva with a benign subepithelial naevus. The cluster of mast cells (and plasma cell hiding among them) caught my eye.

Do you reckon #MastCellMonday will catch on as a hashtag? 🤔

  15. Here's a common #EyePath scenario for #melanoma Monday. Retina on the right (detached, with subretinal fluid), tumour in the middle and sclera on the left. Is the tumour bursting out of the eye as a sign of aggressiveness?

Not in this case. It's exiting via an incision made for sampling fresh tumour. Surgeons, please remember to let us know if you cut into the specimen 👍🏽

  16. Not a #MastoPrompt story, but here's what #magenta looks like on a histology slide 😍 .

The stain is periodic acid-Schiff (that's per-iodic, related to iodine and not period-ic related to time). PAS is typically used to stain mucin, fungi and (my commonest use) basement membrane.

The blobby structures here are drusen, which I view as accumulations of junk beneath the retina, often related to ageing. #EyePath

  20. One for the #EyePath #retina and #choroid peeps.

Here are some beautiful #drusen - low power photomicrograph stained with PAS, higher power with H&E.

I believe (and I am no expert!) the lumpy bits would correspond to hard drusen and the more confluent areas to soft drusen.

    @pathology @ChoroidLab

  21. Time for a #FuchsFriday! 😊

Images show Descemet membrane at x40 objective magnification, stained with PAS (my favourite special stain...) First image shows exophytic guttae and the second buried guttae in the same specimen.

  31. I'm on a roll with academic publications this year! 👀🥳

This one's an #OpenAccess retrospective review of a common specimen that (very) occasionally throws up surprises.

  33. Enjoy some guttae for #FuchsFriday #EyePath #cornea #MedEd #ophthalmology @pathology

Description: High power view of Descemet membrane. PAS stain (good for basement membrane). Embedded on edge with 3 layers visible. Thickening and lamination (layering). A few exophytic guttae (lumps), with further guttae visible buried within the lamination.

PAS isn't a great stain for appreciating nuclei, but there are a few surviving endothelial cells on the upper piece.

  34. Since my last #MedEd #EyePath image (pair of images, even 👀 ) didn't get much attention, let's try something more mainstream.

From where I'm sitting, there can be only one (diagnosis).

  35. Here's a seasonal image of a #cytology #EyePath slide, showing the striking feature of ferning. I'm no expert in the phenomenon (rarely see it in my practice), but it reflects the protein/salt composition of the fluid, in this case a vitreous aspirate. Rather pretty 😊
