Poland has been forced to reduce output on its #coal-fired #PowerPlants following critically low water levels in the #Vistula River.
#Poland has been urged to double down on #CleanEnergy after Europe’s drought wreaked havoc on its coal industry.
Earlier this week (4 August) utility giant #Enea was forced to reduce generation at the #Kozienice and #Połaniec coal-fired power plants after critically low #water levels in the #VistulaRiver limited cooling water supplies.
The move is said to have removed 1.3 GW from Poland’s power system, enough to power more than one million average households. This is around two per cent of the country’s current energy capacity.
River flow near the Kozienice Power Plant fell to just 135 cubic metres per second on 5 August, reflecting #severe #drought conditions.
The plant’s cooling system withdraws approximately 80–100 m³/s of water from the river – more than half of the remaining flow under such conditions.

Climate change exposes millions of Hajj pilgrims to deadly heat for increasingly longer parts of the year
Temperatures in #SaudiArabia are rising earlier in the year and reaching more dangerous extremes, making the pilgrimage increasingly hazardous not only in the summer months, where in 2024 more than 1300 pilgrims lost their lives when #Hajj started in mid-June temperatures reached 51°C, but even during the spring months.
In a super-rapid study researchers from World #WeatherAttribution show that for pilgrims who spend 20–30 hours outdoors, often walking in dense crowds, the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke is becoming far more severe earlier in the year, with temperatures now reaching heights in May that were only seen in June to August in the 1960s and 1970s, due to human-induced #ClimateChange.

#Spain #floods: Thousands of people evacuated in Málaga as country braces for new storms
Emergency services in the #Málaga region — which includes the tourist resorts of #Marbella, #Velez and #Estepona — have moved around 3,000 people from houses at high risk of flooding located near the #Guadalhorce River.
