The study recruited twins raised in the same family across four age groups – those born in 2009/2010 (Cohort 1), 2003/2004 (Cohort 2), 1997/1998 (Cohort 3), and 1990–1993 (Cohort 4).
Data used in this study came from Cohort 2, which included twins aged 10 to 12 at the time of the data collection. The sample consisted of 392 monozygotic (identical) and 648 dizygotic (fraternal) twins. The analyses were based on data from the first wave, which was collected via face-to-face interviews.
The author of the study used data on participants’ socioeconomic background (based on family income and the highest education level of parents), personality traits (assessed using the Big Five Inventory, BFI-S), fluid intelligence (defined as the ability to reason and solve problems independently of prior experience, measured using the short version of the Culture Fair Test 20 R), parenting style (using custom-adapted scales), and parental time (measured through the frequency of family activities).

The data revealed that parental investments are equally effective regardless of a family’s socioeconomic background. In other words, when low-income parents are able to invest the same amount of time and positive parenting into their children, they yield the exact same developmental benefits as high-income parents. Furthermore, the study found that children from disadvantaged backgrounds actually benefit the most from this increased parental investment.
“The findings suggest that interventions targeting parental investments and fostering desirable personality traits could significantly enhance outcomes, particularly for disadvantaged children, thereby offering a promising avenue for improving child welfare and life outcomes,” the study author concluded.

Study participants completed assessments of personality (the NEO Five-Factor Inventory, NEO-FFI), depression (the Beck Depression Inventory – II), and handedness (the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory).
Results showed that right-handed students tended to score higher on conscientiousness and extraversion, while scoring lower on neuroticism compared to left-handed students. In other words, right-handed students tended to be somewhat more extraverted, conscientious, and emotionally stable compared to left-handed students. Female students tended to score higher on the depression assessment.
Further analyses revealed that consistently left-handed male and consistently right-handed female students tended to have the highest depression scores, whereas inconsistent right-handed female and consistent right-handed male students tended to have the lowest scores.
“These findings suggest that handedness and sex independently and interactively shape personality and depressive symptoms, emphasizing the role of lateralization and sex-specific neurobiological mechanisms in affective functioning,” the study authors concluded.

Participants completed two widely used questionnaires measuring sensory processing sensitivity, along with personality measures assessing extraversion and neuroticism. They then underwent an extensive series of laboratory tests measuring both detection and pain thresholds across multiple sensory systems, including hearing, vision, temperature, smell, and balance. Detection thresholds measure the minimum intensity required for a person to notice a stimulus, while pain thresholds measure the point at which a stimulus becomes uncomfortable or painful. Participants also rated how sensitive they believed they were in each of these sensory domains.
The results challenged one of the central assumptions of sensory processing sensitivity. Across the various laboratory tests, people who scored highly on SPS questionnaires did not consistently detect weaker sensory signals or experience lower objective pain thresholds than those with lower SPS scores. The researchers also found little evidence that sensory ability across different senses reflected one general underlying trait.
Instead, the strongest pattern emerged from participants’ own perceptions. Individuals with higher SPS scores consistently described themselves as being more sensitive, particularly when rating their responses to pain.
However, an important part of this finding changed once the researchers considered other personality traits. After accounting for neuroticism—the tendency to experience negative emotions such as worry, anxiety, and emotional instability—and extraversion, many of the links between SPS and subjective sensitivity became substantially weaker. This suggests that some of the self-reported “sensitivity” captured by existing SPS questionnaires may actually reflect broader emotional tendencies, particularly neuroticism, rather than a unique form of heightened sensory ability.
The authors summarized their central finding clearly: “The present findings suggest that SPS is not characterized by enhanced sensory acuity, but rather by the subjective experience and evaluation of sensory input.”
Notably, the study has some limitations. Only women participated, most of whom were young adults, so the findings may not apply to men or older populations.
