  1. How Did I End Up Hosting Science Talks on a Tropical Island??

So… I somehow ended up helping host a science festival on a remote tropical island… and yeah, it was as wild as it sounds. 🌴

Welcome to Lord Howe Island Dark Skies Festival — where I ran nightscape photography courses, helped host the pub science talks (yes, actual science… in a pub), led the kids’ "Blast Off!" space class, explored the glowing light walk, visited the Lord Howe Island Distillery (because science needs gin), and spent every night imaging under some of the darkest skies on Earth.

Between the stargazing, science chaos, and way too many camera batteries, this was one of the most unexpectedly amazing trips I’ve been on.

Seriously… how did I end up here?

  4. Groundbreaking research has identified that levels of genetic diversity among Indigenous Australians may be among the highest in the world.

First Nations people first arrived on the Australian continent more than 65,000 years ago and dispersed to every corner of the country, where both strong cultural and genetic diversity developed between groups.

You probably know that wallabies are part of the scientific family Macropodidae – which also includes kangaroos, wallaroos and quokkas – but did you know that Macropodidae means ‘big feet’? How cute!

  6. Languages that no longer have native speakers are often described as being “extinct”. Thomas Watson prefers the term “sleeping language”, which has an important distinction – a sleeping language can be reawakened.

Refusing to believe his traditional language, Gangulu, had been lost, Thomas embarked on a search that led thousands of kilometres around the world to an attic in Sweden.

  7. If you think a platypus is weird, or an echidna is strange, can you imagine what would happen if you combined the two?

The so-called "echidnapus" – an ancient creature recently identified from a batch of long-forgotten fossils at Australian Museum – may just be the Rosetta Stone of early mammal evolution!

  8. For most of us, hot-air ballooning is a wistful meander through the clouds, punctuated by oohs and aahs. For competition balloonists, it’s a game of fierce concentration and razor-sharp precision.

This year, Top Guns of the balloon world headed to Western Australia to chase glory in the Women’s World Hot Air Balloon Championship 🎈

  9. This incredible footage shows some of the 600 Rainbow lorikeets (Trichoglossus moluccanus) being released back into the wild after surviving Lorikeet Paralysis Syndrome (LPS) 🦜

The mysterious condition has afflicted hundreds of birds, causing them to lose balance and be unable to fly despite not showing any apparent injuries.
