  1. Whoa!!

    theguardian.com/science/2026/a

' Nasa's Curiosity rover has detected organic molecules on Mars, including chemicals widely considered building blocks for the origin of life of Earth. '

    (…)

' "We think we're looking at organic matter that's been preserved on Mars for 3.5bn years," said Prof Amy Williams, an astrogeologist at the University of Florida and a Curiosity mission scientist, who led the experiment. "Is it life? We can't tell, based on this information." '

  2. NASA Begins Implementation for ESA’s Rosalind Franklin Mission to Mars

Scheduled to launch in 2028, Rosalind Franklin will be the first Mars rover to search for signs of past or present life under the Red Planet’s surface.

  3. Rare Earth hypothesis but most planets with suitable conditions have mould on them.

Glorious for some, irritating for most.

  4. RE: masto.ai/@Nonilex/115882567836

I knew this would be coming, Fascists actually hate Science, despite demanding new weapons from it.

The joy of Discovery means nothing to them, it's all "Exploit, Exploit, Exploit!"

Answering one of the grand questions of the Universe "is Life everywhere in Space?" means nothing to a bunch of greedy rapist scum

  5. Instead of "is there life elsewhere in the universe?" people should be taught to ask "what is the distribution of life in the universe?"

The classic framing of the question carries heavy assumptions which are likely false, and it misleads the public.

  6. Exciting news from Space, nearby Teegarden's Star not only has planets, but planets in the right place possibly for Life.
Centauri Dreams has to be one of my most favourite things on the Internet, intelligent yet accessible and right up my street.

    Ad Astra!

  7. "Failed Star" seems a bit pejorative, maybe Wolf 1130C wanted to be a Brown Dwarf?

Turns out phosphine is more common than we think and maybe not the biosignature we thought it was...

  9. Meanwhile in #Enceladus:

    theguardian.com/science/2025/o

' While the new findings do not show that there is life on Enceladus, Khawaja said they indicate there are complex chemical pathways at play that could lead to the formation of substances that could be biological relevant.

The results, he added, support plans by the European Space Agency (ESA) to investigate the moon for signs of life. "I think all the signals are green here for Enceladus," Khawaja said. '

Wow. Evidence suggestive of possible biology on Mars.

  11. There are other explanations for these readings, don't let the Media hype run away with you.

Some day soon though, we'll have irrefutable evidence of life baring worlds and our trivial Terran issues will seem small for a while.

  12. No matter how the scientists revisited their readings, the signal stayed strong. They concluded that K2-18b may in fact harbor a tremendous supply of dimethyl sulfide in its atmosphere, thousands of times higher than the level found on Earth. This would suggest that its Hycean seas are brimming with life.

  13. 1. “Imagine we land a space probe on one of Jupiters’ moons, take up a sample of material, and find it is full of organic molecules. How can we tell whether those molecules are just randomly assembled goo or the outcome of some evolutionary process taking place on the planet?”
