In the US and many other parts of the world, we've basically taken away people's ability to strive toward "the good life"--owning a home, starting a family, doing fulfilling work, and retiring in old age. Maybe those things were never really "the good life," but when you take away even that, of course people are going to numb themselves with #consumerism, #SocialMedia, and other forms of #escapism! We haven't given people an alternative, and we're increasingly criminalizing #protest and #MutualAid and other forms of building a better world. Plus we've done nothing about the #ExistentialThreat to the planet that is #ClimateChange and #COVID19
If you feel #empty, #lonely, #anxious and #depressed, you're not alone! What else could you feel in these circumstances? It's normal to feel #despair in this situation.
I don't know how we offer viable alternatives, but I think the first step is that we stop pretending it's fine. We all know it's not.
