I published a book, more than a decade ago, on the #Akai #EWI 5000 #windcontroller/#synthesiser, aimed at wind instrument #musicians who wish to expand their tonal palette. I suppose it was well received—both people who read it told me so.

Not long after the publication, a UK-based professional saxophonist, who is totally blind, contacted me. He thanked me for the book, but he explained that the fingering diagrams I presented in the book were inaccessible to him. Obviously! That revelation struck me like a thunder. I wrote this article for him, as an addendum to my book.

Since the early 1980s, I had worked with CG and GUI, both in academic research and in industrial application domains. Yet, I did not pay enough attention to the plight of those who are perceptually impaired. In due course, I took conscious steps toward remedying that serious shortcoming, in my systems design work.

Today, we have $0.99 MCUs, and even cheaper sensors, that offer adequate performance and compactness for augmentative technologies for those with perceptual impairments. A cheap #FitBit can indeed be used for just such a purpose, in addition to monitoring the wearer's steps. #AI could make this entire segment of technology much, much more capable, not to mention eminently more affordable.

So, why do all these assistive technologies cost more than the sale price of one's first-born on the open market?

I must say, I am heartily ashamed for my own part, or rather, that which I should have had, in service of society, but did not.

Le concert hi-tech de Kinga Głyk (3/4)

Quand nous avons pris contact avec le groupe de Kinga Głyk, le producteur nous avait annoncé la participation de Hailey Niswan au saxophone et à l'Aerophone. C'est finalement Itai Weissman, également saxophoniste, qui a fait partie du groupe. Mais il ne faut pas confondre EWI et Aerophone, même si les deux font partie de la famille des synthétiseurs numériques à vent. L'EWI (fabriqué par Akai) est le descendant direct du premier instrument de cette famille, inventé en 1970. L'Aerophone (fabriqué par Roland) dispose de hauts-parleurs et de banque de sons intégrée. Pour les saxophonistes, la prise en main de ces deux instruments est facilitée, comme ils disposent de clés configurables comme celles des instruments à vent "analogiques" (saxophones, clarinettes...). Dans les coulisses du concert de Kinga Głyk, un concert très techno

La bassiste polonaise n'a pas remis au goût du jour ce style de musique électronique des années 1980, la techno, mais le moins qu'on puisse dire, c'est que son concert faisait appel à pas mal de technologie notamment avec les instruments des différents musiciens.

À tout seigneur, tout honneur; commençons par Kinga. Alors que les contrebassiste/bassiste des deux autres concerts nous avaient demandé des amplis assez imposants sur scène pour leur instrument, il n'y avait aucun ampli pour la basse le deuxième soir. Par contre tout se passait à travers un boîtier électronique (carte son) qui envoyait à Kinga Głyk le son de sa basse avec les effets désirés à la fois dans le système de sonorisation pour le public, et pour elle et ses musiciens dans le système de monitoring du groupe. Chaque musicien disposait d'un retour avec des écouteurs sans fil, en plus d'éventuels hauts-parleurs de retour sur scène. Ces cartes sons (un exemple ici) reproduisent le son d'amplis traditionnels, comme des amplis à lampes. De plus en plus de guitaristes utilisent ce système sans ampli, mais encore peu de bassistes le maîtrisent comme Kinga Głyk notamment sur scène.

Continuons maintenant avec la batterie de Nicolas Viccaro, sans nul doute la plus impressionnante des trois concerts du festival. Cinq cymbales, deux caisses claires - et il a su utiliser tout cela - avec les classiques trois toms, la Charley et la grosse caisse, et... un énorme ampli derrière son siège, un "subwoofer". Ces amplis (un exemple ici) permettent aux batteurs de mieux ressentir le son de leurs différents fûts.

Si vous n'aviez pas forcément noté ces particularités instrumentales pour la basse et la batterie, vous n'avez pas pu échapper à l'EWI d'Itai Weissman, cet instrument électronique à vent (Electronic Wind Instrument). Terminons par les claviers, nombreux sur scène avec deux claviéristes Paweł Tomaszewski et Michał Jakubczak, chacun avec un clavier Nord Stage (un "2" et un "3") et chacun avec un synthétiseur, un Prophet pour Michał et un Nord Wave 2 pour Paweł. Pour ce dernier synthétiseur, nous n'avons pas pu trouver le modèle demandé par le groupe en location auprès de notre prestataire, ni auprès d'autres professionnels dans d'autres régions. La faute... aux Jeux Olympiques et les nombreux spectacles qui ont été organisés à l'occasion et qui ont immobilisé beaucoup d'instruments de location. Ce synthé étant disponible à la vente, nous nous sommes résolus mi-juillet à en acheter un. Paweł nous a chaudement remercié d'avoir pu en trouver un car, même si le Nord Wave original est plus facile à trouver, les banques de sons ne sont pas au même format pour les deux modèles. Jazz UP cherche donc activement un acquéreur pour cet instrument (annonce sur AudioFanzine et sur EasyZic).

Ask me a couple of weeks ago what I thought of the iPad Mini, I would have said it was a stupid product category.

Now.....it's actually fucking perfect for so many things. Like using it to adjust IEMs on my #x32 or changing patches on my #aerophonepro 30 #ewi . It's small, readable, and works.

Plus I can run x32 edit on it, as well as MixingStation. It's pretty much a swiss army knife for a musician. #ipadmini #apple

Working on my #pedalboard for #saxophone #sax and #ewi today. I have an #eventide H9 and a #Line6 #HXStomp that I need to figure out which one should do what, and get all the presets happening for them.

Work, but fun work.
