  1. The World of Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger. Notable for Dirty Old Town and the much covered but definitive version of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, MacColl’s love song to Seeger. #folk #EwanMacColl #PeggySeeger #vinyl #xp

  2. New inners and outers have arrived so now the cleaning can resume. I’ve only just scratched the folk surface, so onwards with those. This is Ewan MacColl singing the Child Ballads which contains two of my favourite trad folk tunes ever, The Three Ravens and Lord Randall. #vinyl #folk #EwanMacColl #ChildBallads #xp

  5. The Father's Song A timely message for Father's Day... and other things. Germane when I wrote it 12 years ago, I had no idea how much more relevant it would soon be. rustyring.blogspot.com/2013/06/the-... #DickGaughan, #EwanMacColl, #fathers, #justice, #music, #responsiblity, #Scotland, #video

  6. This is an interesting BBC R4 documentary about Dirty Old Town by Ewan MacColl, the various interpretations and the recordings of the song by the likes of the Dubliners and the Pogues.

Ewan MacColl apparently said: "I don't know what the Irish are going to do with it because they are famous for making any song their song.' I can't imagine what he meant. 😂

  7. Last SpaceAce Sunday, we took a listen to the first album that SpaceAce submitted to this project. We had a sort of surrogate spotlight on the second one back in March, pointing to SpaceAce’s own post on that album,* so here we jump to the third.

In memory of our dearly missed friend, let’s raise a glass and take a listen to number 479 in The List. This one is a collection of traditional sea shanties, and one of the many collaborations between Ewan MacColl and A. L. Lloyd, both key in the British folk revival of the 1950s and 60s.

    Thanks, friend.

*SpaceAce’s piece on Forest’s The Full Circle is on the Digital LoFi blog. While our surrogate spotlight simply links to his post, you may want to check it out – in a weird tech glitch/gift, though SpaceAce’s use of the autodelete setting on Mastodon means that his comment on the Mastodon side has long disappeared, it remains on the blog side, complete with his cartoon avatar and signature ALL CAPS joy.
**I questioned pointing this out, but I feel like SpaceAce would’ve said something about it. The title track has a racist word in a lyric describing an antislavery ship; the song appears to have originated during the slave trade. There’s a discussion of the song and its various versions including this one here. The same site has an ultra-detailed discussion of each song on Blow Boys Blow and of both Ewan MacColl’s and A. L. Lloyd’s entire discographies, if you’re interested.

  9. "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a 1957 #folkSong written by British political singer-songwriter #EwanMacColl for #PeggySeeger, who later became his wife. At the time, the couple were lovers, although MacColl was still married to his second wife, Jean Newlove. Seeger sang the song when the duo performed in folk clubs around Britain. 10. CW: Racism against Travellers

I heard Ewan MacColl's fantastic 'Moving On Song' for the first time this weekend - written for his radio ballad The Travelling People in 1964.

Its calls out the irony of a racist settled population continually telling Travellers to 'Go! Move! Shift!'

This version by Siobhan Miller and Kris Drever is great; bold and catchy - youtube.com/watch?v=mtI92VGtyK

Utter pish that the song is 60 years old and hasn't dated a day.

  11. Johnny Cash brings something deeper and more agonised to one of the best-ever love songs, 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face', written by the legendary Ewan MacColl for his lover Peggy Seeger, and made memorable by the equally wonderful Roberta Flack.

An amazing version of the Moving On song with the MacColl brothers, Chris Wood, and Karine Polwart.

  14. For Valentine’s Day, I pulled myself together long enough to cough up a sincere love song for my #StupidAccordionTricks series - this time, #EwanMacColl’s #TheFirstTimeEverISawYourFace from 1957, written for Peggy Seeger & made famous by Roberta Flack. youtu.be/sjjkrx5a9ms

  15. #nowplaying - #peteseeger put out so many LPs on #folkways that many are analogous to semi-casual bandcamp drops. side A of "the rainbow quest" from 1960 is pete in one of my favorite tender/mellow modes, including the 1st recording of "where have all the flowers gone," except all the songs are medlied together as choruses/fragments, intended for somber collegiate singalongs, i suspect. side B is more topical/newsy, bringing #ewanmaccoll / #peggyseeger songs to american ears.
