news at eleven:
--white-- beige abled man thinks posting an anecdote of lifting a woman who used a wheelchair into a gyn chair is something appropriate to write an anecdote about on the internet.
click through to my post and scroll up one. his profile says he likes being wrong because it means he learns something, so let's see if he learns from this.
edit: why the fuck, if he's not "sensationalising" it, did he bother to mention the speculum. entirely not important detail. he already said pelvic exam. let that be enough.

I requested medical evidence to prove my permanent disability to renew my bus pass, GP sent just my medical history to me that has no relevance to my disability & informed me a more tailored one will cost me £45. And that won't guarantee I'll get my bus pass if I do pay that. FFS!! #EveryDayAbleism

This is in the context of Stranger Things, but no spoilers whatsoever.
So Stranger Things made headlines in past years for its thorough and sometimes gross-out closed captions.
I've been watching S5 and haven't seen any of that. Not only that, but no other cues like "[door slams]" or "[gasps]" or "[haunting choral music]."
Apparently, Netflix started rolling out a "feature" last Spring that in shows going forward, choosing "English" subtitles shows only the dialogue. You have to pick "English [CC]" to get the audio cues as well.
I'm honestly not sure who is served by the former who wouldn't be at least as well served by the latter. But the fuckers seem to have defaulted things to the one without audio cues--i.e., the least accessible thing they could have done. As well as undercutting and concealing the hard work of the sound designers.
Fuck the hard-of-hearing, I guess.

When someone tells you it can't be done when you know it can, you're better off doing it yourself & fucking shove it in the face of the deniers & say "IT CAN BE DONE & FUCKING CHEAPER THAN IF YOU DID IT AS YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE!! Parts ordered to prove the fuckers wrong! #EveryDayAbleism 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

happy to see that the Betazed sign language on #StarTrekAcademy is basically standard ASL, with a few stylistic choices in the sign to look more… poetic? anyway, I wish that they'd kept the sign language more in view of the camera.
another thing I wonder is did they cast and hire an actually Deaf/hard of hearing actor for the Betazed president? because if not, I don't like the affected Deaf accent when at the end of the episode he takes off the little interpreter doohickey and voices for himself to say yes.
I mean I really don't like that particular kind of plot device in the first place because it devalues signed languages and places excessive value on voicing, and that people will voice when it becomes important. it leads people to expect voicing from people who sign when it becomes important enough, which is a harmful expectation for #Deaf people to face and a great example of #EverydayAbleism that #Disabled people face on the daily.

"Too often, these fields teach about disabled and mad lives while refusing to materially support the people living them. Our experiences are welcomed as theory, but not as a need. Our pain is legible when it can be cited, but inconvenient when it requires care. We are extracted from continuously, and then left hollow, with only us fighting for our survival." #Ableism #Academia #AcademicChatter #CareEthics #Disability #DisabilityStudies #EverydayAbleism #MadLiberation #MadStudies #MutualAid #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs

Spouse's textbook: "[...]decreased symptoms of psychosomatic illnesses such as asthma and anorexia[...]" [cites: Minuchin, Rosman, & Baker, "Psychosomatic Families: Anorexia Nervosa in Context", 1978"]
Me: ....exsqueeze??? asthma? Psychosomatic?? Also why is a textbook for *2* classes in 2025 citing a study from *1978*?
Spouse: I think [this textbook] is used for a few other classes too.
Me: B r u h.
(Spouse supplied images from their textbook. You're all welcome.)

Well I've had my social landlord & kitchen fitters around to discuss the refit of my kitchen. As expected the design is more about what the social landlord wants than my disability requirements, so the design is a compromise than give me what I require tho better than I thought it'll be. So once they're done, I WILL DO THE DISABILITY ADAPTIONS MYSELF as I know ways to get around their ableist views & requirements if they won't. Not the 1st time I've had to! #EveryDayAbleism

This is how our local council promotes what is basically a shared path along the Wivenhoe Trail. Nice a route it is, it's narrow, it's uneven, it's not properly maintained & by their own admission not wheelchair friendly coz they won't properly surface it. #EveryDayAbleism
-
During my cycle ride I popped over to see the new #HomeBargains store & again not impressed with cycle parking. Typical low quality bolt down ones encapsulated with plastic tunnel like cover & not near a trolley bay & screams #EveryDayAbleism thanks to Colchester City Council!
-
A disability campaigner was given the Freedom of the City of London but couldn't collect the award at the ceremony because the stage didn't have a wheelchair ramp.
-
No lid is unhygienic, it's a risk to my cats & had they told me this over the phone I would've refused it there & then!
Again it's being assumed we are happy to lower our standards to 'accommodate' poor disability adaptions & be fine with it. If people had their way I be living in a frigging hospital like accommodation not a home! #EveryDayAbleism

new policy and personal #PublicServiceAnnouncement for all of my accounts about #Covid19 and #WearAMask; because #CovidIsNotOver and y'all's privilege and #EverydayAbleism is showing as well as your full ass because clearly no one learns shit and there's no nuance on the internet.
if you think this about you after reading the thread congratulations, it probably is.
let me tell you I am so finished and done with this fucking shit and y'all's absolute inability to consider anyone other than yourselves. you're showing that autistic people, people with PTSD and histories of trauma, even essential workers without whom your world would have actually collapsed, are not safe with you and that you don't give a fuck about us. read the thread first, then get back to me and continue here.
from hereon out I will be blocking people who denigrate people not masking without leaving allowance for people to legitimately not be able to.
I'm finished arguing with discriminatory, exclusionary, and just plain stupid leftist liberal whatever you're trying to masquerade your viewpoints as assholes on the internet.
if you can't acknowledge that disability and other circumstances as enumerated upthread exist, you're not an ally. give back your fucking credit and start learning about the communities you are stepping on.
if you just want to broad brush hate for an action without getting an actual understanding and acknowledging intersectionality and privilege you're not radical, you're not leftist, you're not liberal, you're not progressive, you're not even a centrist. you're a failure of empathy who needs to shut your gob on the internet before you put your foot so far in your mouth… well, you know the rest. take a beat and disconnect your keyboard until you can remove the prejudice and lack of breadth of who you consider human. yes, all men didn't apply when the lives in question are already disabled and marginalised and being stepped in by other marginalised people punching down not up.
in other words: fuck you, fuck the horse you rode in on, fuck your supposed praxis and fuck your whatever left of vented you claim to be your being an utter piece of privileged shitgibbon. no wait, that's insulting to primates. I'm done being polite and trying to educate people, go fuck yourself. educating people on their privilege isn't my job and won't somehow magically make me able to mask or appropriately isolate and shelter in place. if you're really judging me for not doing so give me forty thousand dollars and we'll talk. otherwise get out, you haven't paid your dues.
go away, leave me alone, and maybe some day you'll take the time to learn.

@chu
Sadly, I've seen many examples of things like this (poles, utility boxes, etc) blocking access -
Brought relative to GP surgery. There are six 'blue badge' parking spaces, all full. Five vehicles do not display a blue badge.

LBT: I'm now dealing with having to "prove" I need paratransit (in the US, that's the term for door-to-door public transit for people who can't use an ordinary bus/train).
Several pages for me, a few pages for my doctor, and then *they* will have *me* come to their office for an evaluation--just to be sure.
(They'll provide transportation for the evaluation, but I somehow doubt they'll be providing home care for the 3-5 days of #PEM that will follow it.)
But if I don't do this, I can't get to, say, a doctor's appointment without my wife taking half a day off work.

@fkamiah17 Interesting that none of them seem aware that service dogs are legally allowed anywhere their owners go. Yes, they would be 'well behaved' because they are trained to be, but can still be wet, smelly and visible. But their existence just doesn't occur to this group #EverydayAbleism
