New books 📚 i bought lately Sergey Dovlatov, Bridshead revisited, Barns Elisabeth Finch. #litrature #reading #evelynwaugh

Reading Evelyn Waugh’s Work Suspended last night, I came upon this gem - for context, Atwood (the first speaker) hit Plant’s father with his car, killing him:

“They may send me to prison for this. That’s what happens in this country to a man earning his living. If I’d been driving my own Rolls Royce they’d all be touching their caps. ‘Very regrettable accident,’ they’d be saying. ‘Hope your nerves have not been shocked, Mr Atwater’ - but to a poor man driving a two seater… Mr Plant, your father wouldn’t have wanted me to go to prison.”
“He often expressed the view that all motorists of all classes should be kept permanently in prison.”

“‘Well,’ asked Paul, 'how are the sports going?'

‘Not very well,’ said Mr Prendergast; 'in fact, they’ve gone.’

'All over?'

‘Yes. You see, none of the boys came back from the first race. They just disappeared behind the trees at the top of the drive. I expect they've gone to change. I don't blame them, I'm sure. It's terribly cold. Still, it was discouraging launching heat after heat and none coming back. Like sending troops into battle, you know.”

“The last chap who put me on my feet said I was
"singularly in harmony with the primitive promptings of humanity". I've remembered that phrase because somehow it seemed to fit me. Here comes the old man. This is where we stand up.”

Listening to a really good full-cast adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s Decline and Fall on @librivox with Jim Broadbemt and Andrew Sachs. #audiodrama #EvelynWaugh I need to check LibriVox more often when I’m looking for audio entertainment.

𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: "𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹" 𝗯𝘆 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵 -

Absurd and comedic satire on British "appearances" and class with plenty of lowkey digs at other topics along the way. Unfortunately, 100 years later, we are reminded that not all "humor" ages equally well.

𝟯 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: "𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹” 𝗯𝘆 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆𝗻 𝗪𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵 -

Waugh's silly romp through early 20th century high society at once light-hearted and searing satire.

Beyond the News
"News is what a chap who doesn't care much about anything wants to read." — Evelyn Waugh

I seem to have the same discussion about the news over and over again. Most everyone is unhappy with the state of it, hates that it's always bad and that the quality of reporting has slipped to levels of mediocrity not seen in years. And yet people still watch it.

Like most people I stopped reading the

In Book IX of the #Iliad of #Homer, thinking he can buy Achilles's return to service, Agamemnon reminds me of the character in *Brideshead Revisited* of #EvelynWaugh called Rex Mottram, who thought he could annul his old marriage, if only he paid enough.

I see now that, in 2016, *National Review* had a comparison of Trump to Mottram

@albinokid well #LeGuin's there - the master. And others easy to agree on.

#ToveJansson from childhood.
#EvelynWaugh for enduring classic, #BridesheadRevisited.
#MohamedMbougarSarr has impressed most recently (through translation).
#HarukiMurakami for "Kafka on the Shore" alone.
#JaniToivola has sadly not been translated, but deserves a tag.

#RichardPowers for effortlessly evocative and intellectual writing.

And let's not forget #IrisMurdoch.

(#BillWatterson for comics...)
