  4. Anyone else remember the proposal by Apostolos #Tzitzikostas ( #EUCommissioner for "Sustainable Transport and Tourism") to introduce a unified #eu booking system for #rail by the end of 2025?
I haven't heard a thing about that since the announcement back in 2024 so I wrote an E-mail to his team, asking what became of the idea.

  5. seen on fast trains to and from Paris lately: The SNCF drastically undersells the environmental advantage of taking the train. the 3g-to-260g difference is actually much more drastic and thus should also look like it - here 87x difference looks only like 4x. I don’t want to go all Tufte on French rail, but excusez-moi: the illustrations and colors can stay, but accurate representation matters.

    PS: the trains were punctual!!

    RE: mastodon.gamedev.place/@Yakkaf

I took a few resolutions years ago to drastically reduce my carbon footprint. Generally, people think the vegetarian diet is the hardest to follow, but the "no plane" resolution is the one that gave me the most trouble 👇🏻 especially when you compare to how easy it is to book a plane ticket online. #CarbonFootprint #EuropeanRail

  7. RE: gruene.social/@jon/11629658935

The new #EuropeanSleeper service between Paris and Berlin is up and running!

Apart from extending their network into France, it also means there is a train both ways between Brussels and Berlin, six nights per week.
From July, three of those six will call at Hamburg, transforming the connections to Scandinavia from France/BE/GB.

  8. All aboard the SJ #EuroNight from Berlin to Stockholm, which departed its first station 40 minutes late.
Annoying to sit on a cold Hbf platform for in total an hour, but unlikely actually to affect arrival in Stockholm.
More unfortunate was the emergency brake activation that stopped the train within a minute of it rolling out. Soon under way again, though.

  11. All aboard the #EuropeanSleeper from Rotterdam to Berlin, which arrived on time from Brussels/Antwerp.
I'm trying their new type of berth, they call it Comfort Standard. It's basically a 5-person couchette compartment made up instead with proper mattress bunks for max 3 people. Everyone has a seat and also a bed, with no folding down/away needed.

If it's just NL and BE before you cross to GB then I'd suggest b-europe.com (ie SNCB's international site).
Worth looking at bahn.de for more fine tuning of stopovers, but b-europe can do Eurostar reservations.

GB train travel is so expensive that it makes Interrail almost a no-brainer.
The Interrail app has a pretty decent timetable planner too.

Lastly, if you are open to left field suggestions, can I point out: saillink.co.uk

  13. My first time through the renovated Eurostar terminal at Amsterdam Centraal.
I arrived at the recommended time as did everyone else, so long queues. Brits getting their Schengen exit stamp is the rate determining step. Even so, 25 minutes for all the security felt ok.
    #EuropeanRail

  14. Now that I got me to the fish it's the home straight now. Familiar #SwedenToWales stuff.
The main haul is Berlin–Amsterdam by #EuropeanSleeper with a couchette for £36 (that was a sale price, but under £50 is standard).
Hamburg–Berlin before that? Well that's £12 and takes two hours with Deutsche Bahn.
And why Amsterdam? Welcome to the world of Eurostar pricing: a 4hr ride from NL to London via Brussels can cost less than just the 2hr ride from Brussels.

  15. It's time to talk Flixbus.
Subtooting, it seems there are a lot of Interrail folk who love trains more than travel. Me, I just want to get somewhere with a mix of cheap/comfy/fun.
In reasonable doses, Flixbus is all of those, and between Sweden and Germany often quicker too.
The routes that use short-hop ferries (to Puttgarden or Rostock) are best, cos you get a proper break with food and fresh air.
To me, it beats the train in every way.

  16. 1st class train ticket for a 2½ hour train journey and then the 'free' goodies in the SJ Lounge was 225kr, less than £19.
    #EuropeanRail

  17. Made it to Stockholm no worries.
And despite what I said before about going the cheap way, I'm in the SJ Lounge thanks to a 1st class ticket.
On the train, you just get free tea/coffee and posh (aka boring) neighbours.
But the lounge at Stockholm C has a comfy waiting area, genuinely healthy and tasty veggie food and, er, toilets that don't cost.
The £5 extra I spent to go 1st class would barely buy a coffee. Just the toilet saves £1 a, er, pop (TMI?).

If you actually want advice (I bet you have plenty of ideas), then feel free to ask.
#EuropeanRail is kind of what I do.
With a Flixbus and ferries sideline when it's quicker/easier than the train.
Also a lot of time for the folk at saillink.co.uk/

  19. The carrots are in play. In other words, I have set rail.
    Next stop: Stockholm Central.

Feeling very un-Swedish on this train.
    (a) I don't have skis with me – Vasaloppet, the world's biggest ski race, took place 50km away yesterday.
    (b) I'm wearing shorts not thermals.
    (c) I'm not wearing top to toe black. Nor bluetooth headphones.

Money saving the priority this time, with day (£30) and night (£35) trains, a Flixbus (£20) through Denmark and a (free) short ferry hop. Then posh Eurostar Plus for under £50.

En route, there'll be #HummusRoulette but the culinary highlight is purportedly Germany's finest fish and chips. Where, you ask? Not saying. Yet.

  24. A #EuropeanRail question, seeking #Eurostar advice.
When tickets on Eurostar from London to Amsterdam (via Brussels) are cheaper than London to Brussels, is there anything to stop people travelling short?
I've done Amsterdam/Rotterdam to St Pancras but never done a through train to NL. Travelling to Bruxelles-Midi has always been just walk off the platform.
Anything I'm missing, like one half of the train the doors stay locked? Or they activate the ticket barriers at Midi?

  25. Now confirmed, although the ideal evening southbound connection (with the Snälltåget day train direct from Stockholm) is not possible.
Works brilliantly going _to_ #Sweden though, especially from Brussels.
3 hours is a reliable buffer in Hamburg to get breakfast, transfer from Harburg to Hbf, then catch Snälltåget departure for Copenhagen and Stockholm around 0950.
Overall it looks like 1745 from Paris or 2145 from Brussels, arrive Stockholm 2115.

  26. Reading between the lines, it sounds like #EuropeanSleeper are about to go public with info that @maartje revealed a month or so back.
    blahaj.social/@maartje/1157133
Their new Berlin–Paris route will call at a "destination in northern Germany" which can surely only be Hamburg (not necessarily Hbf).
If confirmed, that transforms train connections between Scandinavia and the whole of NW Europe (jnc Britain).
Potentially Stockholm to Paris in 21 hours, or to London in about 24.

  31. Having today tried the with (Eurostar) and without (GWR) 'help yourself to gin and tonic' versions of a 1-hour train delay, I admit I prefer the former.

  32. London. After 48 hours of #EuropeanRail this feels like a parallel universe.

On the Tube from St Pancras to Paddington, the only conversation within earshot was in Swedish. Few Swedes on home turf would talk at all in such a quiet space.

The parallel universe I most wanted to jump to was not available, however.
It's one where sitting down incautiously on a GWR train seat does not evoke an immediate "Fuck!" as I'm painfully reminded of the solid metal bar they've provided me to sit on.

  33. @maartje
This looks really practical for Scandinavia to Britain travellers.
Choose Eurostar from either Paris or Bxl, depending on pricing. Then connect from Hamburg by #EuropeanSleeper.
Alternatively, do saillink.co.uk from Boulogne for the ultimate low carbon journey.

  34. The overall cost of the new train line between #Helsinki and #Turku could soar to 4 billion euros. If completed, it would save approximately 35-40 minutes' travel time between the two cities.

  35. Here's a free #Latvia #TravelTip that goes against my standard advice.
Left luggage is usually cheaper at bus than train stations. But in Latvia, buses rule and that's where the money is.
So choose €2/hour for a locker at Riga's Autoosta or €4 (coins needed) for 24 hours at the train station a 400m walk away.

  36. Not massively impressed by the #LeoExpress train, by the way. Wouldn't honestly recommend, despite gushing review by @seatsixtyone
Delay not a big deal. Loads of space on board and friendly staff. But despite the carriages looking shiny and new, the seats were tired and uncomfortable, even in the 'Business class' that my #Interrail pass allowed me into.
#ProTip: because most people prefer window seats, when the seats are old, you'll often find the aisle cushions more comfy.

  37. Hi @jon do you have any advice on the London-Berlin day train and London-Venice sleeper train routes? How reliable are they? Are they well-established European infrastructure we can rely on, or are they still at the holiday adventure stage? Thank you.

  41. An ask for #EuropeanRail #PKPintercity help.
Anyone else having a problem adding an #Interrail ticket to their online account at intercity.pl/en/ in order to make Polish train reservations?
Have tried Mac and WIndows. Firefox, Safari and even Microsoft Edge. On the English site and the Polish.
I know cd.cz is often a good alternative, but not from Mockava in Lithuania.
Ideas/advice welcome. Yes, the booking window is open. And this is the step before anyway, adding Interrail.

  42. On my last #SwedenToWales train, London to Cardiff. Two days of enjoyable travel with a few bits of unexpected excitement. Looking at you, Deutsche Bahn.
As an out and proud #NotFlying #EuropeanRail traveller, I now have IMPORTANT THINGS TO SAY. Some of which may improve your day, and one of which could save your life.
(Am I selling this too hard?)

  43. Single wooden bike seeks similar for fun days out.
(This is the bike carriage on a normal Danish regional train.)

  44. Interior view on this Transport for Wales dining car also far from shabby.
Having last week praised the Czech trains breakfast, has to be said this is proper job. £11 for all this, cooked by a chef on board. In the running for best veggie breakfast on #EuropeanRail, I reckon.

  45. Time for my new bike to take its first big trip, heading for Orkney and Stromness Shopping Week.
One joy of #Interrail is that I can take any route I like from Cardiff to Thurso. So stops today in Chester and tomorrow in Edinburgh.
A second joy (hmm) of Interrailing in Britain is that the entire pass can pay for itself in a single journey. All my #EuropeanRail adventures to get here were basically free.
Thirdly, Cymru can turn on the style when viewed from a train window.

  46. The #Eurostar was pleasingly uneventful. Just, as usual, my reintroduction to a lot of British people being very British. (I include myself, sadly.)
Plenty of earwigging opportunities. A high maintenance mum (50s?) and her daughter coming home from their first #EuropeanRail adventure. A family on the comedown from Disneyland Paris, complete with a 'bit of a madam' 3yo daughter. A lady from Idaho with all kinds of plans for her week-long holiday in London and then Scotland.

  47. Some other time (not twenty past gin o'clock) I will write up advice for first timers in navigating train stations from the former Soviet bloc. They follow a different, and perfectly good logic, but it can catch you out if you've only done British or west European train travel.
Praha hl.n. is off-the-scale baffling in fact, due to its size and the fact that "J" indicates a south platform in Czech while (wait for it) north platforms are labelled "S".

  48. A journey of a thousand schleps begins with a single mile.
Just walked to the station for the first of no idea how many trains or how many km over the next week.
Even by my #SwedenToWales standards, this go west #EuropeanRail adventure is a round about route.
Main target is Poprad in the Tatra Mountains of Slovakia, hence going with #Trains2Tatras (which you are welcome, even advised, to mute).

  49. #SwedenToWales woke up on a ferry approaching Harwich and will spend the morning on trains, and at least one rail replacement bus. Cardiff by noon.
Which may give me some time to inflict all my invaluable insights about travelling on #EuropeanRail upon you. Shouldn't take long.
