careful self reflection is a sign of strength
But it would be uncouth for me to pretend that there isn’t some self-interest involved. Being in charge of a social media project is, turns out, quite the stressful endeavour, and I don’t have the right personality for it. I think I need not elaborate that the passion so many feel for social media does not always manifest in healthy ways. You are to be compared with tech billionaires, with their immense wealth and layered support systems, but with none of the money or resources. It manifests in what people expect of you, and how people talk about you. I remember somebody jokingly suggesting that I challenge Elon Musk to a fight (this was during his and Mark Zuckerberg’s martial arts feud), and quietly thinking to myself, I am literally not paid enough for that. I remember also, some Spanish newspaper article that for some reason, concluded that I don’t dress as fashionably as Jeff Bezos, based on the extremely sparse number of pictures of myself I have shared on the web. Over an entire decade, these tiny things chip away at you slowly. Some things chip faster. I steer clear of showing vulnerability online, but there was a particularly bad interaction with a user last summer that made me realise that I need to take a step back and find a healthier relationship with the project, ultimately serving as the impetus to begin this restructuring process.

Eugen started mastodon as a self funded project and kept it going years before twitter imploded. This is the writing of a thoughtful, serious, reflective person who deserves to be praised. He didn’t end up the world’s richest billionaire.
However, he sure made a dent in the universe. All the best during recovery and I look forward to mastodon attaining greater heights.

Hive mind: I do love Mastodon but I notice that my posts are limited to some 500 characters, which is very short and prevents from sharing about my academic work and field. Yet I see people posting fair long stuff that requires me to scroll down. Definitely far more than 500 characters. How do they do that ? Is there something that escaped me ? #eugenrochko ?

Sadly so, but you need to consider that being on your own free island with a bunch of pals (possibly connected to a few similar islands, mountains and deserts) while 7.9 of 8 billion people are stuck in the mainland dictatorship without even realizing it isn't really a solution if you want to change the world for the better. We still need to fight the dictatorship and the (totally not benevolent) dictator!

I'm too petty to hold off from saying "I told you so" about #EugenRochko
When a tech bro goes "mask off" and never apologizes for it; receives the credit, accolades, and press for a thing many communities have built and keeps it for himself; and prioritizes growth over safety — at a certain point it's on us for allowing him and his generals (like Byron, now neutralized) so much authority over us.
Thankfully hard-forks of Mastodon are underway and #Mastodon was never fully the #Fediverse, so as Mastodon exits Fedi so that Gargamel can continue to grow his fiefdom out from under the "oppressiveness" of GDPR, we still have the #Fediverse right here where we left it. Because the Fediverse is us, the people who left the corporate silos. So as Mastodon the Brand reimagines itself as a social media silo with #Gagron as King, the Fediverse imagines itself carrying on without kings and absolutely without Eugen.
Enjoy your flash in the pan, buddy. Could have been a champion. Instead, you're a footnote of a footnote.

I find it really telling that, when you look at the #Twitter timelines of these #SocialMedia moguls' (basically #Elon and #Zuckerburg), it's always non-stop rambling about their sites, whatever other stupid thing they're doing with their money now (what they call '''#Entrepreneurship'''), right up to the open fantasies about world domination, but if you go look at @Gargron's #Mastodon profile, it's just like, interesting pictures and tech articles, most of which are boosts of other people, you know, like a NORMAL PERSON.
It's like these #Billionaires just want to flood our lives with garbage, then gloat about how amazing they are for basically putting humanity in a cage so it can dance for their amusement, but Eugen Rochko just wanted to experience social media without the bullshit.
(I also find it telling that #EugenRochko and #Rochko are barely used hashtags compared to #ElonMusk and #MarkZuckerburg: they are very loud morons.)
