I’m taking some leave today, and so far (apart from the usual housework and shitty admin), I’ve managed to watch the #Llamasoft Heart of Neon documentary (finally!) and my Commodore 64 Ultimate arrived as well! So I’ve been arsing about with BBS boards and demos and a couple of games, and Eliza (for the #ethnomethodology nerds). Absolute bliss.

I am doing some #sociology, #ethnomethodology and #electronics work - trying to breadboard an oscillator that will eventually go in a multi-oscillator audio device - and I have RUN AGROUND. So partly the thread that follows is me rubberducking stuff, partly it's me doing 'fieldnotes' (of the 'normal troubles' of following schematics) and partly it is a desperate cry for help from anyone who might be able to offer it.

I've built another thing. A thing for doing #sociology and #ethnomethodology as applied to the study of music. Here's a thread on it, which I will call #ResonantCascade.
The sociology of music is typically, perhaps counter-intuitively, not focused on music-making very directly. In fact, it focuses on almost anything BUT music-making (the music industry, music consumption, class taste and distinction in music preference, etc)...

A while back I shared some pics of some music/sound-making devices I've been messing around with, with the idea of a 'sociology/ethnomethodology of sound' in mind (https://mastodon.online/@pdbrooker/114314254754067833). Using devices and maker-skills as a way to engage with the social life of technology and objects broadly, and sound specifically. I've sort of expanded on this a little (thread incoming!) and would love to know peoples' thoughts as these things develop!

I'm still not sure what I want to do about it, but I've been thinking about the idea of a #sociology / #ethnomethodology study of sound - yes, there's been studies of music, but just raw sound. For me, that's involved digging into how sounds are made. So I've been pigging about with DEVICES (yeah!), synthesising drums, sampling, making some noise shaping things...thought I'd show them off here just because! Maybe more to come at some point with regards how this could be sociology, but not now.

We've got a new postgraduate researcher with us, Sabreen Syeed, working on a project in partnership with the World Museum in Liverpool, about the Islamic Golden Age of science and its relationship to AI. Really excited to co-supervise this project, lots of really interesting stuff going on involving maker methods, working with ancient texts, praxeological work with foundational algorithms, astronomy, loads more. OK, back from the #UndiscipliningII conference, with some brief dispatches from the field on our (myself, Rob Smith, Terry Au-Yeung, Patrik Dahl, Patricia Jimenez-Lugo and Jonathan Ablitt) project. In no order, unsorted, unfilitered. We'll be turning this into some kind of writing (likely a Sociological Review blog piece) sometime soon though, so will link to that when it lands.

I've been working on a device for a conference project; a wearable lanyard/badge that will auto-update when plugged in, which gives (and makes public, witnessable, accountable) instructions pertaining to doing the conference. I've been making some Raspberry Pi powered conference badges for a talk I'm doing for The Sociological Review's "Undisciplining II" conference later this year. The idea is, we get people to wear them, and the badges will give them a series of instructions via an e-ink display about how to do the conference ("I'm Phil, and I'm tagging on to someone's dinner plans" kind...

This morning, I did a bit of #GenerativeArt with our little Liverpool #Ethnomethodology group, wanted to share some thoughts on it as a work-in-progress type thing (i.e. like basically everything I post on Mastodon...).
So, I've been a bit interested in generative art and AI as a domain in which creativity meets code and so on. And, using my newly-acquired skills with electric-y stuff, I decided to make a generative art bot; a physical device which automates the doing of art...

Gosh, what a morning @KAEEGoetheUni: trying to think with the analysis of the IPCC by Neyland & Coopmans (drawing on #ethnomethodology and #ActorNetworkTheory*) about the #IPCC** in an #environmentalSTS course. Ok, I get it, there is an issue with #acronyms in #teaching #sts. But I love it so much :)

#Ethnomethodology texts are confusingly written, but the name of the discipline itself provides a good example of how one should use "methodology" (it being about studying ethno-methods, thus it is an method*ology*)

Heat the milk till it just starts to boil. Let it cool and check the temperature by dipping your bare finger in it while counting. If the pain starts at ten it's the right temperature to add the culture and put it in the warm place.
I learned this from a woman who ran a Syrian restaurant in Flagstaff, Arizona in the mid 1990s and have used it many, many times.

...but I *think* what I was trying to do is poke about my interests in the possibilities of rendering academic practice in Playdate's 1-bit graphic format (same as I'm going to be doing with #Skylab2049, where I'm hoping to put the work of doing an ethnography into game code...somehow...). So, the awkwardness and difference between the game and real life is one way of drawing out what those practices actually ARE (i.e. why is the game only a poor reflection?) - THAT'S #ethnomethodology, chums!

On the front page of The Conversation today (because our article just got published an hour ago)! Myself and colleagues (Michael Mair, Dipanjan Saha, Terence Heng) have written about generative AI and its use in re-animating the dead in various ways (e.g. 'deep-fake' technology, new startups like Here After and Replika, etc). And we snuck a bit of Wittgenstein in at the end which is like, the #ethnomethodology version of rick-rolling. Comments and discussion appreciated!
