  1. @Lhyr @devil @Vivaldi #Kagi #OrionBrowser perks don't look enticing at all for most non-technical users. On top of that, the price is actually more than what I suggested... and who wants to add yet another recurring subscription?

In any case, paying for #ethicalsoftware should become the new normal. I like what @futo_tech is doing in this regard although I hope they stick with #copyleft licensing.

@ardour also has a great business model.

  5. I thought this 2022 essay by Bradley Kuhn makes a lot of good points with respect to the politics of copyleft. The essay is in the context of Putin invading Ukraine and responding to criticisms of the free software community in this context.

  10. The whole #xz / #lzma fiasco just proves two points I've been wondering on why is it not more popular around FOSS / FLOSS advocates:

1.- Regarding xkcd.com/2347/ model. Developers of infrastructure need to be paid a *living wage* to reduce social vulnerabilities. In the current sociopolitical model, the entities currently best positioned to do so are the *distros* that use their products. I'm p sure joining efforts of all of #Debian , #Fedora , #Arch , etc..., they should have enough to at least be able to cough up a whole minimum wage.

2.- Not only dependencies need to be hotpluggable, but also their versions need to be too. One issue I've always had with Debian is that only one version of a given library can live in their repos at a time, making eg.: snapshots.debian.org a necessity if you're daily driving Sid (or Stable + Backports). libxz shouldn't be an issue if you can just runtime switch it out for libyz.

  15. Integrity isn't just about keeping promises; it's also about refusing work that doesn't align with your ethics. Your values are your moral compass in a world of complex decisions. Stick to them. 🧭

  16. Neglecting integrity in software delivery can lead to harmful outcomes. From dark UI patterns to unethical business practices - we must remain vigilant.

  17. A lot of open source software is often marketed as being "ethical". Which is nice as a broad term, but I had no idea what that even means in the context of software.

So, I asked ChatGPT, and this is the response.

  22. Some have suggested that we write new software licenses that would prohibit unethical use (as mentioned in the article above). See ethicalsource.dev/

In my opinion it is quite unlikely that such a software license would be more effective than the has been in protecting for those who use Red Star OS.

That is to say: not at all.

  27. This open ended opinion piece (theregister.com/2023/01/01/fos) from @ssharwood takes me back to Red Star OS (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_St) and Red Flag Linux (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Fl).

If it is true that they are, or were, Red Hat Linux derivative distributions, they are based on the installer software I wrote when I worked there.

Of the two, reports of what Red Star OS is and does trouble me (personally speaking).
