The best AI story you probably never heard — because it worked quietly.
LA County built a model (with UCLA's California Policy Lab) that predicts who's likely to lose their housing in the next 12 months — before it happens. It pulls data across county agencies (social services, mental health, health services) and connects people to stabilizing help *upstream*, instead of waiting for the eviction notice or the ER visit.
The results:
People on the high-risk list became homeless at ~3.5x the rate of the eligible population — meaning the model actually finds the right peopleIt reaches folks who weren't connected to ANY existing prevention program
They ran an equity audit: performance was essentially identical across race, ethnicity, and gender
County-wide homelessness has now declined two years in a row (-4%)
No panic headlines. No billionaire keynote. Just prevention, transparency, and an audit. This is what ethical AI deployment looks like: model → equity audit → human services → rigorous evaluation.
Could this work in Roanoke? Our unhoused neighbors deserve upstream help, not just emergency beds. Who else in the #Roanoke region is thinking about this?

What we need now is a community-run SETI@Home / Folding@Home-like method to train a model on that data, where folks *choose* to donate compute to help train the model.

AI spend on lobbying is going through the roof in Washington. @ft reports OpenAI has almost doubled lobbying expenditure in the first half of this year, while Anthropic spent close to three times as much.
This comes as political battles loom over regulation, new models, thirsty and power hungry data centres, and getting pro-industry policies adopted.

I am with Linus, 100% on this. I first used an LLM to generate an application in 2022. I was new at using LLMs, and LLMs were not as advanced in 2022.
Within minutes, I had generated an application that would have taken me several months to create, coding manually. I was blown away! And, I became convinced that AI was definitely a useful tool for programmers.
I totally get why people hate AI. With that in mind, what if we could address each of the pain points of AI, keep the good aspects, and get rid of the bad?
