  1. "Visions for a New Web"

    "Introduction
When Sir Tim Berners Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989, it was meant to facilitate the exchange of scientific data between researchers around the world. Over the years, it has mutated into a digital landfill with a cloud of data smog hovering above it, filled with commercial advertisments, dancing baloney, clickbait, fake news, AI posing as humans, solicitors, snooping agents, identity thieves, phishers, scammers, spammers, and crackers. As a result, trust in basic institutions like the government and the press has eroded, and we are left confused, with few things to believe in.

High priests and gatekeepers ruled through sheer obscurantism and gaslighting the masses into thinking that they are less than capable of running their own lives. Talking heads and panels of experts browbeat us into choking down our voices, and engage with their endless dissections of issues of no actual relevance, while ignoring what is meaningful to us.

In this article, I offer a few ideas to shape how we use the Internet in this century. The aim is democratization, and giving a voice to everyone, including marginalized people who were kept by a gauntlet from voting in a so-called democracy."

  4. The best AI story you probably never heard — because it worked quietly.

LA County built a model (with UCLA's California Policy Lab) that predicts who's likely to lose their housing in the next 12 months — before it happens. It pulls data across county agencies (social services, mental health, health services) and connects people to stabilizing help *upstream*, instead of waiting for the eviction notice or the ER visit.

    The results:
People on the high-risk list became homeless at ~3.5x the rate of the eligible population — meaning the model actually finds the right people

It reaches folks who weren't connected to ANY existing prevention program

They ran an equity audit: performance was essentially identical across race, ethnicity, and gender

County-wide homelessness has now declined two years in a row (-4%)

No panic headlines. No billionaire keynote. Just prevention, transparency, and an audit. This is what ethical AI deployment looks like: model → equity audit → human services → rigorous evaluation.

Could this work in Roanoke? Our unhoused neighbors deserve upstream help, not just emergency beds. Who else in the #Roanoke region is thinking about this?

  9. @mos_8502 - I really dig what Common Corpus is trying to do to ethically source their data.

What we need now is a community-run SETI@Home / Folding@Home-like method to train a model on that data, where folks *choose* to donate compute to help train the model.

I have called out the #ableism of the pure ubermensh before.
    To protestations "It's not!!!"

#Ai has many problems, but like any technology, it has many benefits.
One of which, and it will become more apparent as time passed, is #assistedliving

In my lived experience, my cognitive power are fading.
I am getting dumber. I know this.
In 20 years time, if I live that long, I will struggle to make a coherent sentence.
I've seen my future in my oldies.
AI allows me to create work that I was not able to create since my 30s-40s.
And it is creative work, because you guide the machine as you guide a lathe or a chisel.

I can no longer pull a 3 day long crunch session fueled by coffee and ambition.
I can no longer master a new framework or tool, because it takes me a very long time and is very hard.

The young(er) Butlerian jihadists lack empathy and world experience.
Not everyone is driving a cognitive Maseratti.
Some of us are driving mopeds (or face other challenges as OP does)

"Thou shal not use AI, and if you do, that makes you an evil broligarch fanboi",
Is an ableist, unemphatic, elitist take, that is more telling on them, than it is on you.

Especially in the days of #openweight and #sovereign models.

  43. I've been working on my #homelab and a question bothers me :thaenkin: :

How can we integrate AI without reproducing or amplifying model biases ?

We often say "garbage in, garbage out... (GIGO, 2020)"
    :blobpeek:
But is it that simple ?

LLMs reflect their training data, leading their inevitable biases.
Does the model itself have a responsibility or is it 100% to the user ?

I'm digging into the subject. How do you manage this in your projects ?
