Ethanol as a (component of) fuel is a nice idea.
Energy from Sun to move vehicles.
But nowadays, if one were to take, (numbers IIRC) 4 fields growing Corn to make Ethanol, and cover one in solar panels, it would capture more energy/miles for vehicles. The other 3 could be planted in food, and we could charge our vehicles and not make CO2.

  4. The last episode of Carbon Cowboys with Amy Westervelt summerizes the intersection of capitalism, colonialism, and religion, leading to the results we see today.
It also discusses how the supposedly "green" corn ethanol displaced land use into the tropical forests of Indonesia, leading to more devastation than the original problem.

I agree in principal. Some #Iowa farm land should be returned to wetlands, trees, native prairies, etc. The scale of #Corn to #Ethanol production is enormous and should be phased out. Since it is so inefficient there's plenty of room for more solar, while we undo the damage already done.

  7. "Forty percent of America's corn crop — 36 million acres — goes to producing ethanol, a fuel that barely breaks even on energy and may be worse for the climate than gasoline. Billions in subsidies keep the machine running."

The chart I'm including here is really the take home.

At this time, with current tech, 👉️ #Ethanol from #Corn is NOT economically viable. 👈️

So all that Federal money is just more special interests at the public teat. Just a way to let big businesses in non-oil producing states get in on the #FossilFuel gravy train.

Ethanol from Sugarcane does make sense, which is why most of the flex-fuel innovations are found in Brazil.

  9. Once the world's second-largest sugar exporter, India is expected to have little surplus for export for at least three more seasons as El Nino weather conditions threaten production and ethanol demand squeezes supply. japantimes.co.jp/business/2026 #business #india #ethanol #sugar #elnino

  10. I used to use a lot of E15 since Sheetz has it at most of their newer locations and the car I had then actually got 1 or 2mpg better with it (likely because it was 88 octane instead of 87) but after a while I started getting emissions related check engine lights until I stopped using it.

Here's the biggest thing. I first started using E15 because it was cheaper but slowly the price of E15 increased to only be slightly cheaper than E10... It started out sometimes being 50 cents cheaper only to eventually average 5 cents cheaper as people started using it instinctively. Clearly the cost of ethanol was cheaper but the industry (and/or Sheetz) found that they could pocket those savings once consumers were used to using it... Make it a mandate and there is no incentive to compete with E10 because it's not accessible anymore.

  11. Sorry but I can't get behind adding more ethanol to our gasoline. For decades we've been told about how ethanol reduces prices at the pump but every time more ethanol is added corporate America uses it as an excuse to increase their profits and it starts causing vehicle issues that increase with the age of the vehicle.

It's always pushed as a money saver to consumers but when it's mandated we never actually see fuel costs go down.

  12. So, the kakistocracy has decided the best way to deal with the #IranWar is to add more corn juice to our gasoline. And that's a problem.

Most of the gas labeled 88 at American pumps is #E10, 10% ethanol. And ethanol does indeed help make gas cheaper. But it is 33% less efficient, and in hot months dramatically increases smog.

Ethanol is also a hygroscopic solvent. Unless a vehicle is labeled "flex fuel", running 15% ethanol for more than a tank or two may cause damage to seals, rubber bits, and even aluminum. If your engine was manufactured before 2001, E15 can melt your valves. Literally.

It makes the car run less efficiently, produces significantly more #pollution, and can damage many existing vehicles on the market.

Believe it or not, and I'm having trouble, two #GOP Senators said it best when they said: Expansion of #E15: A gift to the #ethanol lobby and a consumer betrayal:
