I have seen some (non-aggressive) alt-text advocates write the alt-text themselves, and offer it to the users (who didn't add alt-text).

That is much, much better than yelling at someone (for not including alt-text)!

No nagging. No aggressiveness. No hostility.

But — the aggressiveness of those alt-text and CW advocates was (and probably still is) causing people who newly joined the Fediverse to leave —

Because one of these new users' early experiences on the Fediverse feels like they are being yelled at by these alt-text and content-warning advocates. And, don't feel welcomed. And leave.

I think one good thing about it is that — it feels like the very aggressive alt-text and content-warning advocates seem less common.

That doesn't mean that alt-text and CWs don't have value. (I often add alt-text, for example.)

i initially opened this account in the wake of #eternalnovember to make #memes promoting #mastodon, but in time, things took their own dynamic and i now consider it a general meme account.
on the other hand i already had my "grown up" account that mostly follows (geo)politics (mastodon imho still underperforms) and sciences (a bit better).

i personally use a rather moderate resolution for today standards and use compressed #jpg. yes, there are other more efficient formats like #webp ...but i figured out the #thumbnail doesent show in many peoples timeline, which is of course fatal for a attention seeking "mememaker" as my self.

For those who are unaware, lemmy and kbin to a lesser extent are in the early stages of a rapid growth in users, similar to the one Mastodon experienced in November last year.

In a move similar to Twitter, Reddit has all but confirmed that 3rd party apps will be locked out with their new API pricing, effectively forcing people to use the official app or nothing.

That has driven a lot of people to look for alternatives. I expect the wave in new users will ebb, but it will surge back again even larger once the 3rd party reddit apps are officially unusable.

We live in interesting times on the fediverse

@teledyn if you compare pre pandemic numbers, i can tell you as a birdsite veteran, that ther was a big wave of new arrivals on twitter at the wake of covid and imho an even bigger with the start of the war, while things here really took off in #eternalnovember when the musk takeover finalized.

personally i see the whole more as a marathon. on the other hand our community here is imho to fixated on twitter. facebook (global south) is way bigger. just to say.
