At the #ESSI meeting today, a scientist pointed out how pitifully few #EarthObservation satellites there are compared to the tens of thousands of "communications" satellites (mostly #starlink) and how backwards that is.
Partly we're playing catch up, but really, as scientists we don't need so many simple comms satellites... Our applications do not require we pollute the night sky.Cc @sundogplanets

After #IMBIE, now #GLAMBIE - the #glaciers mass balance intercomparison - their contribution to #SeaLevelRise is currently bigger than the #IceSheets but by the end of this century many of them will be gone.
We will miss them 😢

The 3rd IMBIE is in the pipeline now and it's going to be enormous...#Greenland has contributed about 15mm since 1972, #antarctica a bit less, where there is higher uncertainty but most of it is from #WAIS

I *really* like this photo of an #IceShelf edge shown by Noel Gourmelen on the #Polar+ project.
It really emphasises that these are 3D and 4D problems, not the usual 2D cross section or plan view.. we really need to understand these processes to assess #Antarctic stability

Very inspiring introduction from Philippe Tulkens head of #Climate and Planetary Boundaries on the importance of the #GreenDeal and how #science can contribute to the common European goals.

I find the argument that joining the #ESSI European Sky Shield Initiative in any way impedes a country’s #neutrality extremely unconvincing. And the expert interview in the podcast is a case in point - it mainly sound as if there is a misunderstanding as to what ESSI actually is.

Maybe this already happens? But from Austrians' politicians point of view it's probably more important that neutrality is very popular in #Austria
I just wish we had a honest discussion about it. Basically, because neutral Austria became surrounded by #NATO countries over the last decades, many assume that we will be fine anyway.I think it's clear that the selfish way Austria (and also #Switzerland) currently defines its neutrality is bad for PR in other countries. If Austria wants to take part in something, neutrality is not a problem, but if the government does not want to take part in an initiative, it's "Oh no, we're neutral".

Looks like the European Sky Shield Initiative is picking up momentum: Switzerland apparently will also sign a declaration of intent this Friday.

Berlin's missile defense shield project angers Paris.
In October 2022, Germany announced the launch of European Sky Shield (ESSI), an integrated short, medium and long-range defense program, bringing together seventeen countries, fifteen of them members of NATO.
Four months after Berlin's announcement, this initiative is challenging France's vision of Europe's strategic independence and upsetting the interests of certain manufacturers.

Denmark and Sweden have joined the European Sky Shield Initiative, coordinated by Germany.
