You'll see stone lanterns in many Asian gardens & lining pathways & entrances of Buddhist temples. They have a long history.

    History of stone lanterns:

#StoneLanterns have been known in #China as early as the Han dynasty (202 BCE–220 CE), and prevailed from the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties all the way up to the Tang Dynasty, when they were introduced to #Japan. The earliest known extant stone lantern in China is the Northern Qi (550-577) stone lantern in the remains of Tongzi Temple in Taiyuan, Shanxi. Other early stone lanterns which date from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) remain extant in several temples around China, such as the stone lantern in Faxing Temple in Zhangzi, Shanxi which was built in 773.

We are getting things rolling for the Esquimalt Lantern Festival! We need crew to help us build new lanterns mid-September as well as help at the event itself. This year, we have expanded the #festival slightly by having #LanternMaking for the general public on Thursday, Sept 25 & the main event on Friday, Sept 26.

It features #music by local musicians, handmade lanterns, large-scale #puppets , and interactive #art installations throughout the park. The festival's mandate is to create a warm, welcoming environment that celebrates all things #weird and wonderful!

  12. We had an amazing public turnout for 2024 Esquimalt Lantern Festival. Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen this year. I was working the lanterns making station inside the pavilion until 8pm. I walked around some of the festival after my shift.
