  8. "Good read on the #EspionageAct , it does not merely target “traitors and spies.” Even during #Trump ’s own presidency, obscure citizens who kept classified material at their homes, and were never accused of communicating it to anyone or aiding a foreign country, were convicted and sentenced to years in prison under the very same Espionage Act provision Trump is now charged with breaking."

  9. #AileenCannon did not indicate when she would issue a formal ruling on #Trump’s bid to toss out the #evidence.

The #FBI agents who searched #MarALago in Aug 2022 found HUNDREDS of #ClassifiedDocuments strewn throughout Trump’s living area. Daniel Ellsberg’s courage and contributions should be honored by abrogating the #EspionageAct of 1917, which was designed to stifle his example of dissent and whistleblowing

  14. This is the sort of scenario that #ColdWar spy thrillers used to explore back in the day. What #WeirdDonOLD did when he spoke with #Putin is actively compromise #US #NationalSecurity. This applies even if they just exchanged pleasantries and talked about each other’s hobbies, without #Trump violating the #LoganAct.

If any one else did what Trump did here, there would be talk of charges under the #EspionageAct.

  16. I ADORE that the #trump administration is at such a loss as to what to say about the #signal situation, that Trump said he didn't even know about it when first pressed on it.

He definitely did. He was acting like a kid who was caught with chocolate on his face, and didn't know what to say to mom with an empty cookie jar.

Everyone else has a similar reaction in his cabinet.

Using a third party app for TOP SECRETS violated the #espionageact

  17. Crazy story!

"I have never seen a breach quite like this. It is not uncommon for #NationalSecurity officials to communicate on Signal. But the #app is used primarily for meeting planning and other logistical matters—not for detailed and highly confidential discussions of a pending military action. And, of course, I’ve never heard of an instance in which a #journalist has been invited to such a discussion.

    Conceivably,
#Waltz, by coordinating a national-security-related action over Signal, may have violated several provisions of the #EspionageAct, which governs the handling of “national defense” information, according to several national-security lawyers interviewed by my colleague Shane Harris for this story. Harris asked them to consider a hypothetical scenario in which a senior U.S. official creates a Signal thread for the express purpose of sharing information with Cabinet officials about an active military operation. He did not show them the actual #Signal messages or tell them specifically what had occurred."

#September11, 2001: Lessons Learned And Overlooked

"It has been 23 years ago this week since the attacks on September 11, 2001 in New York City, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, PA, killing nearly 3,000 people and injuring more than 6,000. On that day, the United States had a choice: The #GeorgeWBush administration could have treated the attacks as a violation of US and international law, launched a criminal investigation, and brought the perpetrators to justice in accordance with the rule of law. Instead, President Bush waged #EndlessWars against #Afghanistan and #Iraq, pushed through Congress the USA #PatriotAct, opened the notorious detention center at #GuantanamoBay which remain to this day, rounded up Muslims and South Asians for #IndefiniteDetention, initiated a wave of #CivilLiberties and #HumanRights violations, and committed wholesale torture against detainees and others.

"To assess the legacy of 9/11 and the lessons learned and the lessons overlooked, we’ve invited someone who was at the center of Bush’s #WarOnTerror. John Kiriakou is a journalist, former CIA counterterrorism officer, former senior investigator for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and former counterterrorism consultant for ABC News.

"In 2007, Kiriakou blew the whistle on the CIA’s torture program, telling ABC News that the #CIA tortured prisoners, that torture was official U.S. government policy, and that the policy had been approved by President George W. Bush. He knew what he was talking about. In 2002, he was responsible for the capture in Pakistan of #AbuZubaydah, then believed to be the third-ranking official in al-Qaeda.

"He became the sixth #whistleblower indicted by the #Obama administration under the #EspionageAct of 1917 — a law designed to punish spies. He served 23 months in prison as a result of his revelations.

"In 2012, the #RalphNader family honored #Kiriakou with the Joe A. Callaway Award for #CivicCourage, an award given to individuals who 'advance truth and justice despite the personal risk it creates.' He won the PEN Center USA’s prestigious First Amendment Award in 2015, the first Blueprint International Whistleblowing Prize for Bravery and Integrity in the Public Interest in 2016, and also in 2016 the Sam Adams Award for Integrity in Intelligence, given by retired CIA, FBI, and NSA officers."

  20. The resolution also calls for the
    * The U.S. to urgently reform the 1917 Espionage Act
    * The U.S. to conduct thorough, impartial, and transparent investigations into alleged war crimes and human rights violations disclosed by WikiLeaks and Mr Assange.
    * The U.K. to conduct an independent review of the treatment of Julian Assange

  23. #JulianAssange was released from Belmarsh Prison after nearly 15 years but pled guilty to conspiracy to violate the #EspionageAct in a #Saipan courthouse. Despite his release, the case sets a troubling precedent for #journalism, highlighting the US government's stance that exposing powerful entities' wrongdoings can be criminalized, thereby chilling future journalistic endeavors.

  24. Here's the thing about #JulianAssange and the #EspionageAct prosecution that some folks are all worked up about...
For conviction, the law requires either intent to harm the U.S. or gross negligence in the handling of the classified information.
If you don't think Assange had intent, you haven't been paying attention. AND he was grossly negligent in what he made public.
Real journalists don't have intent to harm, and they are careful about what they release.

  25. Cuz she doesn’t want to be removed:

Judge #AileenCannon is skeptical that #evidence from #MarALago should be thrown out – she was not receptive to the defense’s complaints about the 2022 search of #Trump’s home.

Her skepticism toward defense was unusual, as a Trump appointee who has issued many favorable rulings toward Trump & has often clashed w/special counsel #JackSmith’s team…

  26. The guy, who was appointed "fucking moron"-in-chief by his former Sec of State Tillerson, left Florida courtroom after pleading *not guilty* yesterday, only to openly admit a couple of hours later in Bedminster, NJ, that he stole all these federal (classified) documents, because he felt he had the power to loot them.

Not a valid defense, but an admission to the charges.

P.S.: Where's Trump's priority list ranking the potential sales value of the stolen national security docs?

  28. @3x10to8mps A guy with $50,000 of debts would hardly pass security clearance vetting to get a job moving luggage on an airport.

Trump has a debt burden of at least $1 billion to refund — and he didn't have to pass security clearance checks.

Debts can be tempting to act illoyally or even treasonously. (Foreign) adversaries know such weaknesses & will try to exploit them for their benefit.

    Unaccountability leads to brazen criminality.

  29. @Reuters Hitler's war of aggression, as outlined in his testimony of his mass-murderous conspiracy "Mein Kampf" clearly determined Poland not to be the last target of his aggression, but rather the conquest for "living space in the East", including the Soviet Union.

Not even Stalin took it that seriously, even signing a non-aggression pact with the Nazis to aggressively invade & occupy parts of Eastern & North-Eastern Europe like Poland, the Baltic & more.

As Stalin's self-perceived imperial heir, what kind of pact had Vladimir Putin Trump secretly sign in Helsinki sharing formerly Soviet-occupied territories, with the consent of the idiot, who was so eager to build a Trump tower in Moscow?
