The trail leads inside the Pillar of Jor. First, however, there’s a Sphinx with a (second) riddle.
I haven’t the faintest idea what the answer is—or how I’m supposed to find it.

Good news: We finally found our missing star witness.
Bad news: he saw an invisible, smoking man enter the apparently impenetrable Pillar of Jor.
So naturally, we’re going in after him. 🔔
Oh, and please don't mind the Eldritch Horror.

WHAT THE FUCK MAN MY LITTLE GOBLIN PAL JUST ASKED ME IF I HAD CHANGED OVER THE YEARS AND I RECEIVED SO MUCH PSYCHIC DAMAGE THAT I INSTANTLY FUCKING DROPPED DEAD ABOUT IT

The exploded tea shop has given up its clues, but its owner has vanished. The mysterious person in yellow led us into the City Below—only to leave us with a hat.
Time to see if we can make sense of any of this. 🤠

game of the year

We were supposed to be investigating a tea shop. Instead, I tried squeezing through a pipe and got us trapped in the City Below.
Snell, loyal goblin friend that he is, followed me. ☺️

Going live with Esoteric Ebb! 🔔
It’s my first playthrough, I’m a cleric, and apparently my six ability scores all have opinions. This can only end sensibly.

I bought around 5 games with the steam sale going on. Lot of "freedom of choice" type games. One had been on my wishlist for years and was 90%.
First time hearing about Esoteric Ebb, but really enjoying it. I had to do a save roll so I didn't make a stupid joke to an NPC. I also got into a staring contest with a Kobold.

Just saw the credits roll on #EsotericEbb and what a wonderful game that was! Ngl, a beautiful dialogue right at the end also caused some tears in my eyes ("what was the prayer").
I can really nothing but recommend playing it if you enjoy RPGs *without* constant fighting and instead a ton of talking with amazing characters, plus an interesting world.

Let's play Esoteric Ebb for the first time
-
So, in other news, I played Esoteric Ebb over the last week or so.
I thought it was good, but not as good as Disco Elysium, which I'm on record as thinking is the best (computer) RPG ever made. This is relevant because Esoteric Ebb is very open about being influenced by the latter, and by the most philosophical of the late-90s/early2000s D&D video games, Planescape: Torment - broadly, it's approximately D&D 5e mechanics and a homebrew setting with metacommentary on D&D tropes (some of which as well worn as the fact that Enchantment is the most overtly evil school of magic, some of which becomes a bit overly postmodern for me), with DE's "your attributes speak to you", "you can internalise thoughts for bonuses", "politics is everywhere" and general approach to time passing and interactions.
Interestingly, the lone dev does *not* do 5e combat straight - it's a sort of fusion of DE's one combat encounter ("make choices in the same mode as everything else, but with higher stakes") and D&D initiative order and to-hit mechanics. What I find a little irritating about reviews of EE is how they call this innovative, when it's not even innovative for *tabletop* RPGs - there's plenty of systems which don't do D&D's turn-based mechanical approach to combat (including games where combat can be a single die roll, just like anything else, if it's not particularly important to the flow of the game).
And, I guess, broadly, this might also be why I'm generally not as incredibly enthusiastic about EE as reviewers seem to be - it's well-written, there's parts that are even quite effecting (but nothing as good as the best of DE)... but the fantasy-kitchen sink setting and the general "D&D wackiness" of it really detracts from the focus that made DE a truly excellent game. -

#esotericebb is one hell of a good game so far. Simple principles, but excellent execution: wonderful design, capturing story.

Esoteric Ebb ist ja mal ganz super töfte. Ich hab ja schon Disco Elysium sehr gemocht, aber hier gibt's zudem noch Würfel und ein gewisses Pen & Paper Rollenspiel Feeling. Ziemlich cool!

My husband played the demo of Esoteric Ebb, and we got into a discussion about whether it’s too similar to Disco Elysium or if we are witnessing the birth of the “discolike” genre convention.
He said there will be discourse about how “it’s not a discolike, it’s a discolite, because the protagonist isn’t addicted to anything”
(He does like it, for the record: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2128090/Esoteric_Ebb_Demo/ )
