🔥 In 2025, Europe recorded its highest wildfire emissions since 2003 and largest burnt area on record (about 1.03 million hectares). Spain alone produced around half of all emissions, and with Portugal, accounted for around 65% of total burnt area.

🌊 In 2025, the European ocean region recorded a record high annual average sea surface temperature (SST) for the 4th year in a row. The Mediterranean recorded its second-highest annual SST. A record 86% of the European region saw at least one day of ‘strong’ marine heatwave conditions.

❄️ In 2025, much of Europe saw fewer snow days than average, while end‑of‑season snow cover extent was 31% below average and snow mass 45% below, both the 3rd lowest in 42 years.

In 2025, all European glacier regions saw a net mass loss, with Iceland recording its 2nd‑largest loss since 1976. It was the 4th year in a row that all 19 global glacier regions lost mass. 📉 In 2025, around 90% of the continent had fewer cold stress days than average – a record low. 📈 41% of Europe saw more ‘strong’ heat stress days & parts of southern Europe had up to 30–40 more tropical nights.

️🌡️ In July 2025, sub-Arctic Fennoscandia saw its longest and most severe heatwave on record: a 21‑day event with temps ≥30°C near and within the Arctic Circle leading to ‘strong’ heat stress, severe drought and high fire danger.

#ClimateChange #ESOTC #ESOTC2025 - European State of the Climate - “The ESOTC 2025 paints a stark picture: the pace of climate change demands more urgent action. With rising temperatures, and widespread wildfires and drought, the evidence is unequivocal; climate change is not a future threat, it is our present reality. In confronting the impact on biodiversity loss, we need to match the speed of adaptation happening in the clean energy transition and at the same time, ensure robust science continues to underpin our policies and decisions.” Samantha Burgess, Strategic Lead for Climate at ECMWF - European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), which implements the Copernicus Climate Change Service, and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) https://climate.copernicus.eu/european-state-climate-record-heatwaves-mediterranean-arctic-while-glaciers-shrink-and-snow-cover
