  1. Just saw a #YouTube video of a #detailer showing how to clean a snowfoam cannon, and someone from UK commenting "you should use citric acid for that (he is already using 25% acetic acid) it is safer. You can buy that from Asian shops"

The detailer is in #Indonesia 😁 (did the commenter not notice the accent, or even look at the creators profile?)

  2. Digging the scene with the #gasoline : Former rally driver and #motoring journalist "Uncle" YS Khong from #Malaysia advises young #drivers how to save #petrol ( even though Malaysia has its own oil reserves and refineries, its still affected by #war in the #MiddleEast )

You can also hear #Malaysian English or #Manglish in this video 😁

The petrol stations in suburban Malaysia are larger and bigger than UK, and even have small restaurant areas with proper tables (my cousin said the food at them is very good, it is better than you would get here in Blighty)

  4. RE: social.tchncs.de/@vfrmedia/112

After reading recently about an uncle getting clawed up last year by a panther/leopard whilst checking on his lorry in a highway layby, this does now make some sense as "Harimau" is a word for *any* big cat (panther / leopard / tiger) and they prowl a lot closer to the cities than I realised! #Malaysia #ESEA #tootSEA

  5. Haiyaaa - this isn't /that/ far from where my relatives live!

The uncle had a lucky escape from a #panther / #leopard who clawed him after he took a rest stop when driving his lorry (this would be equivalent to being jumped by a big cat in a layby of the A14)

I didn't think you still had big cats that close to the cities..

  6. It appears both #Indonesia and #Malaysia are able to ban #Grok but apparently without blocking the whole of #X / #Twitter (or at least without #Musk whinging about it).

How are they doing this? Is #Musk quietly working with these countries governments in return for letting the rest of X get through, and/or simply accepts they have the power do to this?

Both countries are somewhat theocratic Muslim majority nations which are not considered "free" by Western standards but with increasingly global power and plenty of natural resources

  8. TBH the young woman is doing far more honest, useful and socially beneficial work in the #tyre #garage her family set up than the AI, startup or blockchain stuff she was being trained for at #University

I was surprised the business was struggling, maybe roads in #Singapore are so much better than UK that tyres last much longer, or a lot of debt got tied up in stock, particularly #alloys (there were some high end brands like Oz on the stock list!)

Here in UK a tyre garage which also did alloy refurbs would be *really* popular

  9. #Diplomacy has worked in SE Asia - a #ceasefire has been agreed between #Thailand and #Cambodia following peace talks in #Malaysia (I suspect Kuala Lumpur had far more of an impact on this than Trump - no one wants a war in their neighbouring countries!)

  11. As well as my dislike of needles, /this/ is why I never get #tattoos - "cultural awareness" training given to old bill (from late 90s and put together by the Church of England who wanted to keep relevance and clout in increasingly secular "Cool Britannia" era) stereotypes men of #ESEA ancestry with tattoos as #Triad / gang member (I also fit some of the other stereotypes such as having a clean car with a personalised registration mark and driving around late at night)

  12. Some gammon is claiming logistics/warehouse businesses in *Mid #Suffolk * (a good 15-20km from #Ipswich) are not employing locals but staffed by "hordes of #Chinese citizens from the mainland".

If any of that were in the slightest true, I would have noticed this - I'm always driving around the area and I'm near enough only #ESEA person there other than my own relatives and a few local healthcare workers, (many of whom work at same place as me!)

  13. @ben my full name is widely duplicated in SE Asia (due to my fathers side of the family being Malaysian Chinese and me having a single Western given name without any Chinese characters) - companies based in #ESEA countries routinely gave me the title of "Mr Great Britain" or "Mr Reading / Lower Earley" (a suburb of Wokingham near Reading where I once worked), presumably to avoid confusion with similarly named staff at their companies 😁

  14. The saddest thing about Nadiya's experiences is she is a good few years younger than myself, yet nothing really improved in all that time.. I can definitely relate to the pressures to be both #British and #Asian at the same time, in varying different proportions depending on who you happen to be around at the time #BritishAsian #UK #ESEA #Desi

  15. Just had a sponsored post for an #ANPR #surveillance camera scheme appear in my #Meta feed, from a company that sells "normal " #CCTV equipment. and burglar alarms. The kit seems as capable as that used by the public services, yet is clearly intended for small private users (such as guarding a yard/car park). Such schemes are widespread in #ESEA countries, but its the first time I've seen one advertised to the #UK market..

  17. @gerrymcgovern its worrying too as Malaysia is one of the richer and more advanced #ESEA countries these days. Also the elcos (electrolytic capacitors) appear to have been quite carefully picked off and sorted separately - I hope those aren't being resold and finding their way into "new" equipment! (it is the early failure of these low cost but important components which creates a lot of e-waste in the first place)

as an aside, my late father was once a reporter for NST..

  18. LB: wasn't expecting Petronas and so many others from #ESEA countries to turn up at the top, and there aren't even that much reserves compared to the UK! I hope it doesn't result in the environment being completely destroyed for relatively short term gains (one source claims reserves in #Malaysia would only last 14 years at current consumption rates)

  19. Haiyaa : A British #Singapore #Chinese businessman was kidnapped from the #golf course and worked over in #Hertfordshire and threatened in an attempt to get a ransom in #cryptocurrency , amid scenes that wouldn't have been out of place in a Hong Kong action movie (this level of #crime is rare amongst the #ESEA community nowadays, although it did occasionally happen in 1970s to 1990s)

    bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cv2d5n

  20. @purplepadma @TCMuffin in the countries where this has been tried - mostly in #ESEA (East and SE Asia, particularly #japan it is only because of depopulation and ageing (there aren't enough young people around in some regions to work as carers); and the projects haven't been that successful..

  21. Other retailers are available but Angela Hui's thoroughly good & powerful read Takeaway - her memoir of growing up in Beddau, in the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf to the north west of Cardiff, is 99p currently at that Big River's UK eBook store.

It shines light on life in the takeaway, blending Chinese & Welsh heritage & gives voice to the experience of immigrant parents & the meaning of ESEA identity.

  22. In 2011, broadcast engineers in #Singapore were transmitting footage the Formula 1 Grand Prix via Singapore Telecom, and sent "bars on red" as a test pattern in the PAL video feed to the #EBU (the large red field shows up distortion in the PAL analogue video).

The specifications don't define which order the bars and red field appear (normally they are at the bottom), so they took this opportunity to be patriotic at the same time 😁 #ESEA #TootSEA

I've been watching various videos of industrial processes in #ESEA (East and SE Asian) countries. Most of the videos are recent (well after 2020) but *everyone* is wearing masks in the factories - in some cases its protection against chemicals/particulates but I'm also seeing the same in CAD and admin office areas. This is across multiple different countries too, KR, SG, JP, CN - everyone is now masked at work...
