Dnes jsem nadšený z #CESNET. Během několika hodin pro náš výzkumný projekt dedikovali kýženou infrastrukturu pro #eScriptorium. Během dopoledne nainstalováno a už nám to běží. Kdybychom měli totéž provozovat přímo na ústavu, stálo by nás to několik set tisíc. Takto je to pro projekt zdarma v rámci vědecké infrastruktury.

@adi @BL_DigiSchol Interesting! As you can see in my own recent post, I am in the process of training an opensource HTR model for early 20th-century British handwriting for #escriptorium -- but it's going to be a long and challenging process to prepare enough data. e-Scriptorium is based on kraken, but none of the existing models were good enough to serve as a basis for our use case. So if anyone is interested in helping us prepare a kraken-compatible ground truth, please let us know!

@sw Wir sind noch auf der Suche nach Wissenschaftler*innen, die mit uns ein #eScriptorium Modell speziell für britische #Handschriften des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts trainieren wollen! Wir nutzen dafür bereits transkribierte Briefe aus dem irischen #Letters1916 Projekt, aber wir kommen bei der richtigen Datenformatierung für eine "ground truth" nur langsam voran. Daher freuen wir uns, wenn sich Interessierte für eine Kollaboration finden. Bitte meldet euch bei mir! 💌

As part of an Atrium workshop, my colleague Susan & I are trying to prepare #trainingdata to build a special #HTR model for early 20th-century handwriting from the British Isles in #escriptorium. Unfortunately, none of the existing #kraken models worked as a basis. We are now experimenting with different hands & image qualities. Dirty images (see below) distorted our model, so we focus on clean samples. Are other researchers interested in codeveloping a ground truth with us? Let us know!

@KathyReid I strongly doubt that Transkribus leads to data sovereignity. You cannot download the created models and transfer them to another service. The service is not opensource. It is paid. It is rather vendor lock-in. I prefer opensource #eScriptorium.

Wir haben im Rahmen eines Projekts den Nachlass Joseph von #Laßberg digitalisiert, mit #eScriptorium Volltexte erzeugt und noch #NER mit spaCy (als Forschungsdaten) und Googles NL gemacht. Spannendes Projekt, oft festgestellt, dass Open-Source-Alternativen noch nicht so weit sind und viele Übersetzungsschritte brauchen. Trotzdem erfolgreich fertiggestellt. Steht jetzt öffentlich zur Verfügung.

#Transkribus hat momentan so oft technische Probleme, dass ich sehr froh bin, mit #eScriptorium nun eine Alternative zu haben. Ich weiß nicht, ob ich noch einmal ein Projekt explizit mit Transkribus beantragen würde. Aktuell 850 Jobs in der Warteschlange und kein Weiterkommen sind als zahlender Kunde keine Lappalie.

Wir haben dieses Jahr zwei neue #HTR-Projekte. Eines mit #Transkribus, eines mit #eScriptorium. Die Gründe liegen im Projektkontext und Material, aber eine gewisse Vergleichbarkeit existiert schon. Mal sehen, wie das ausgeht.

Im Rahmen der #LoveDataWeek bietet die Universitätsbibliothek #Mannheim am 14. Februar 2024 einen Online-Workshop zu #eScriptorium an. Mit eScriptorium lassen sich gedruckte und handschriftliche Dokumente automatisch oder manuell in Text, der weiterverarbeitet werden kann, umwandeln. Im nächsten #DigitalHistoryOFK nimmt Pauline Spychala (DHI Paris) die Texterkennungsplattformen #eScriptorium & #Transkribus unter die Lupe. Ziel ihres Projektes ist die Entwicklung eines Workflows, der beide Tools effektiv kombiniert, um u.a. den Eigenschaften der untersuchten Quellen gerecht zu werden.

So I decided to choose #eScriptorium and install my own instance. In order to create my own models, I have bought a graphic card. ES is not so much developed as Transkribus and there some bugs but it basically works.
So, there is a way from archival source to sparql query: archive > photo > escriptorium > sources database (SMW) > annotations (to be automated) > triples database (Wikibase) > Virtuoso > SPARQL

We just finished an intensive introduction into #eScriptorium, the #opensource platform #OCR / #HTR at the PSL-week with lovely projects in Latin, French, German, Chinese, Vietnamese, ...
Lovely to discover a couple of new open generalized models trained by others:
#Latin #manuscripts and #incunabula 8th to 15th century.
