  1. I'm trying to read my book, but I'm also trying to watch a stream of Sword of the Sea from the good people at #EscapeArtists. It's very difficult doing both simultaneously (and posting about it and playing board games online at the same time are just beyond the pale). I do not multitask well.

  4. I see Escape Artists email notifications have had a bit of a hiccup this morning, but thanks for the 700 notifications.

This may actually be the prompt I needed to get my email under control.

  8. CW: CW: mention of a usually derogatory term for a female sex worker, but it's also someone's pseudonym so...

I sometimes wonder what happened to some of the early internet characters - not the hyper famous ones whose stories are well documented, but the supporting players.

In particular I was thinking about the Word Whore, who cohosted one of the very early #podcasts, Air Out My Shorts, which is surprisingly still online at airoutmyshorts.com/

She also did some narration for the excellent #EscapeArtists suite of podcasts, and it's mainly in that context you can find any online evidence of her existence today. I vaguely remember maybe a decade or two ago that she was in some sort of trouble and was selling some artwork, but I forget the details and may have made the whole thing up.

    I hope she's ok.

I also wonder about websites that had daily updates for years and years, and then one day just stopped. Their creators are still active in other areas and sometimes the same field (the one in thinking of I bought a book from a while ago), but they just walked away from a routine they'd kept for decades. I kinda get that, but it also seems weird that sometimes things just end.

  11. Ha!!

Having a weird moment when one of my favorite internet radio stations, #RadioParadise, is playing Shiva in Exile's "Breathing" which is the theme to #PodCastle, the fantasy fiction podcast I used to be audio producer for. Such a weird moment to be hearing the entire song in such an unexpected moment.

Speaking of, are there #EscapeArtists folk out here in the fediverse?

  14. I'm shamefully behind on my #podcast listening, but one reliable bright spot has been #EscapeArtists, especially #Pseudopod.

They play a lot of public domain works which I get, I really do (Escape Artists are legendary for paying print rates), and I don't want to diminish modern writers at all, but there are some absolute gems to be had. I've no doubt Sturgeon's Law applies, but there's still gold to be mined.

Case in point, The Curious Story of Susan Styles, a ghost story (or, charmingly, a Psychic Romance) from 1893 which is still hella enjoyable today, even though it was virtually unknown.

    You can catch them here:

Disclaimer: I throw money at them, because they're worth it.

  23. CW: Cat staring at you

Olive the Death Kitty slipped out the front door today and headed for adventure. No messing around in the yard for her. Instead, she shot across the street, and wandered three or four houses north. I finally captured her in a neighbor's back yard and brought her home.

She wants to know if we can do it again.
