If you are worried about the #ESAEuclid satellite losing power during the upcoming #solareclipse, worry no more: all telescopes at Lagrange Point 2 (#Euclid and #JWST, formerly also #ESAGaia) have orbits designed to be free of solar eclipses. They simply are never in locations where the Moon could eclipse the sun.

The four Artemis II astronauts just set a record for human distance from Earth, 400.000 km. This also explains why "service" missions to #ESAEuclid, #JWST, or #ESAGaia are unlikely (and currently impossible): their location at the Sun-Earth L2-point is ~1.5 million km from here.

Today I'm presenting Gaia Sky VR at the 'AR/VR for space programmes' workshop at ESTEC @ESA_Tech.

We would *love* to have one, but currently there is none actually on the horizon.
#ESA has a number of 3D model formats for download (none for printing yet):

And ESA's scifleet compilation has paper models at least for some missions, e.g. #esagaia

Coming Monday (31. July) we will declare "First Light" for #ESAEuclid 🛰️ and show the first engineering images that the #VIS and #NISP instruments 📷 have taken of the sky, using a fully focussed telescope! 🔭
Yay! 🥳
That said, #Euclid has now also arrived at its ultimate distance from Earth, circling around the Sun-Earth Lagrange point 2 😎🌏🛰️ - joining #ESAGaia and #JWST:

During our 6-year sky survey, #ESAEuclid 🛰️ will transmit huge amounts of data 💽 - for being 1.5 million kilometers away from 🌎 Earth: up to 100 GB are downlinked every day, more than twice than what #JWST or #ESAGaia transmit.
How fast is your internet? #ESAEuclid is downlinking 📡 its data with up to 75 megabits per second. How that works and what tech is needed for that you can read in this #ESA background article:

Happy after showing how real-time exploration of the Milky Way stars in an array cube of 7.3 TB can be done in a laptop with 8 GB RAM and 15 GB of free disk space thanks to #ESAGaia data and the magic of #compression via #Blosc2. Also shown how #Btune helps immensely in determining the best combination of filters and codecs for achieving best #performance or cratio.
Thanks to the attendees; it has been a great experience! #SciPy2023Slides available at: https://www.blosc.org/docs/Exploring-MilkyWay-SciPy2023.pdf

The sparse virtual textures also work in VR, and they are quite impressive.

From CASW: The amazing #SciWri22 Patrusky Lecture by Harvard astronomer Alyssa A. Goodman on "The New Universe" is now online! Learn what #JWST and #ESAGaia are revealing, imagine a simulated universe, and check out new #dataviz tools for #scicomm and exploration. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BToAEK38WaU
