I think this #hoverfly which I just met on our balcony in Bochum, Germany, is an Eristalis tenax, the common drone fly (or at least an #Eristalis sp.) - the pattern on the abdomen of this "most widely distributed syrphid species in the world" (Wikipedia) can vary significantly. The drone fly Eristalis tenax has the appearance of a honey bee. This gives them protection against predators, although they are completely harmless. They are also good pollinators as the females eat pollen which they need for egg production.

#Eristalis transversa, transverse-banded #FlowerFly (#Syrphidae) is my "spark bug". When I first noticed it in my #Brooklyn backyard in 2009, I thought it was a bee! When I learned it was a #Fly (#Diptera, "two-winged"), I was hooked.
When I saw how many different insects my #NativePlants attracted, I devoted my entire #Garden to #WildlifeHabitat #Gardening.
