"Mushroom Murderer" Erin Patterson has been found guilty of triple murder, and was today given a life sentence.

The bizarre nature of this crime and her courtroom demeanor has caught a lot of public attention — she poisoned the family of her ex-husband with Beef Wellington laced with death cap mushrooms. Three people died, and a fourth nearly died and required months in the hospital to recover. Her ex-husband was also invited to the fateful lunch, but he declined. It appears that she poisoned him on several occasions previously, and he had to undergo surgery to remove a large portion of his bowel to save his life in 2022.

  8. That she was found guilty is not very interesting. She was really bad at hiding her tracks.

What is far more interesting is the attempt to deny her guilt. That is really something. Putting everyone through all that palaver, concocting so many elaborate stories. What incredible ego to persevere with the charade. What kind of mind thinks for one second they would get away with it?

And what ego would even attempt to murder a bunch of people anyway? That's what I want to know.

  12. Every so often I get an update on the mushroom killer from Shellie. And I'm never satisfied. All those podcast episodes and news series, all focused on her testimony in court and whether she might win or lose.

None of that is interesting. I just wanna hear a podcast that asks why she's even contesting the charges. Why is she maintaining this facade that she didn't do it? That's what's interesting here. How did she ever imagine she could get away with this murder plot? What makes her hubris so consuming? How she did end up so arrogant as to think her feeble attempts to mask the evidence would be sufficient? What drives a person to plot murder in the first place?

Most of us would never commit murder. Not just because "urgh what a pain in the neck that would be" but because "I'd get caught for sure." Here is someone who crossed both those lines and did it anyway. That's a story.

  14. CW: AU mushroom murders - odd jury fact

For those who have been following the Australian mushroom murders trial, here's an interesting fact I didn't know about AU juries.

The trial began with 15 jurors, providing a buffer for emergencies. If one juror falls ill, the trial doesn't have to restart. Makes sense.

"During this trial, one juror was discharged for potentially speaking to friends or family about the case, so we are now down to 14 jurors.

"But only 12 get to make this decision, so before they retire for deliberations two jurors will be balloted off."

Imagining sitting on the jury of a whodunit murder trial for several weeks, only to be removed before deliberations begin. I'd be livid.

  15. The daily details of how Erin Patterson tries to explain away the very compelling evidence is not so interesting to me.

I'd rather these podcasts talk about why she's bothering to lie about it still. That's what's interesting. Why keep up this charade?
