Book Review: Heaven’s Ditch by Jack Kelly

Summary/Review:

I thought I was getting myself into a book about the history of the Erie Canal.  And it is – but it’s about so much more – using the thread of the Erie Canal to connect the stories of turbulent changes in Western New York in the first half of the 19th century.

The canal itself is an engineering wonder constructed by the state of New York under the leadership of Governor DeWitt Clinton.  Did you ever wonder why the canal crosses the entire state rather than a shorter route from the Hudson River to Lake Ontario?  Turns out that option was discarded due to too great a difference in elevations, the hazards of navigating Lake Ontario, and that they would still need a way to get around Niagara Falls to reach the other lakes.  Kelly offers a lot of great detail of the engineering challenges especially in Lockport where the “flight of five” locks was constructed to carry the canal over the Niagara Escarpment,

While workers excavated the canal, the growing Western New York region became the “burned-over district” at the heart of the religious revivals of the Second Great Awakening. The term originates with the Presbyterian minister Charles Grandison Finney. Other leaders emerged to found entirely new religions.  William Miller predicted the end of the world on a specific date, and even though it didn’t come his followers eventually evolved into the Adventist movement.  Meanwhile, Joseph Smith, Jr. founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints based on a new scripture he claimed to have found inscribed on golden plates in a hill in Palmyra.

Western New York was also a hotbed of social movements, including abolitionists (many overlapping with new Christian denominations) and women’s suffrage.  In 1826, a former Freemason named William Morgan planned to publish a book exposing Masonic secrets.  After Morgan disappeared and was presumed murdered, the scandal launched an anti-Masonic movement that grew into a political party.  The Anti-Masonic Party held the first presidential nominating convention in 1832, and their candidate – William Wirt – won 7 electoral votes!  And if to tie together this book with a cosmic coincidence, Morgan’s widow Lucinda ended up becoming one of Joseph Smith’s “plural wives!”

The book can be disjointed as jumps back and forth among different threads.  But I found the details of this histories and the connections among them fascinating.

My bike commute runs past the ruins of the Odenbach Shipyards on the old #ErieCanal, where it turned north to downtown Rochester (see alt text). I’ve always struggled to get a good shot through the riot of vegetation, so I made the #chaos a feature instead of a bug.

In May of 2014, I traveled through New England and upstate New York. My youngest daughter graduated from college in Wheaton, Mass., and my youngest son graduated two days later from RIT. We flew up and rented a car, and did a LOT of driving over a two-week period. We were in #Rochester, and stopped to have lunch at a pleasant little restaurant overlooking the New York State Barge Canal (you may know it as the Erie Canal) in the town of Pittsford. Afterwards, I snapped this photo.

Found the site where the Cohoes Mastodon was dug up! The falls are about 90 feet high, but a lot of the water has been diverted for a hydroelectric plant and the Barge Canal.

I knew the #ErieCanal ended near Albany and there were a lot of locks near the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers, but in many visits to the area I'd never seen these falls!

Cohoes is about 8 miles north of Albany. The 922 bus runs every twenty minutes and takes about an hour. We bought tasty sandwiches in town!

Fascinating (at least to me) #history fact: #Syracuse’s early wealth was based on #salt, and those historic banks lining the #ErieCanal literally stored salt in their vaults.

This pool and fountain at #ClintonSquare cover a block of the historic route of the #ErieCanal through the center of #Syracuse. The canal was rerouted in the early twentieth century, and its original course through the city was filled and converted into (the paved) Erie Blvd.

I know it's belated, but I had to submit at least one. We were driving from Rochester to Virginia yesterday, and I didn't get to post.

There's a swap meet in ohio, my family, and I have gone to since I was a child. We drove down little back roads for almost 2 hours to get there. The last time I went, I decided to stop at one of the historical markers I had passed so many times. Turns out it was a section of the erie canal. And this is a view standing in the middle of it. Who would have guessed!?

Continuing #eriecanal heritage. Port Byron NY, old 19th century lock 52. Original saloon, blacksmithat the end of the property. Great view of old and new when looking back at mid 1850’s canal locks with current Interstate 90 right behind it. Also visited Richmond Aquaduct about 9 miles NW. Originally had 31 stone arches to carry the canal across a river. 7 arches and some of the foundations remain. Highly recommend these stops if you’re in the #FingerLakes area of #newyork
