In May of 2014, I traveled through New England and upstate New York. My youngest daughter graduated from college in Wheaton, Mass., and my youngest son graduated two days later from RIT. We flew up and rented a car, and did a LOT of driving over a two-week period. We were in #Rochester, and stopped to have lunch at a pleasant little restaurant overlooking the New York State Barge Canal (you may know it as the Erie Canal) in the town of Pittsford. Afterwards, I snapped this photo.

Found the site where the Cohoes Mastodon was dug up! The falls are about 90 feet high, but a lot of the water has been diverted for a hydroelectric plant and the Barge Canal.
I knew the #ErieCanal ended near Albany and there were a lot of locks near the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers, but in many visits to the area I'd never seen these falls!
Cohoes is about 8 miles north of Albany. The 922 bus runs every twenty minutes and takes about an hour. We bought tasty sandwiches in town!

This pool and fountain at #ClintonSquare cover a block of the historic route of the #ErieCanal through the center of #Syracuse. The canal was rerouted in the early twentieth century, and its original course through the city was filled and converted into (the paved) Erie Blvd.

There's a swap meet in ohio, my family, and I have gone to since I was a child. We drove down little back roads for almost 2 hours to get there. The last time I went, I decided to stop at one of the historical markers I had passed so many times. Turns out it was a section of the erie canal. And this is a view standing in the middle of it. Who would have guessed!?

My latest #LocalHistory post features some ephemera from one of #Schenectady's longest-lasting and well-loved local department stores, The Carl Company. It first opened in Medina in 1891 but moved close to the #ErieCanal in Schenectady in 1906. It expanded into suburban stores in the '60s, and lasted until 1991. Featured on the blog are some of the books into which shoppers pasted Gold Bond Dividend stamps for discounts:
