Family photo. My two ID75 ortholinear/matrix-style custom mechanical keyboards.
The top one (white, black, and orange colors) is the older, with an Atmel chip, XDA profile PBT keycaps, and QMK/VIA configuration. Usually kept at work.
The bottom one (white characters on black) is the newer, with a RPi2 chip, MOA profile PBT keycaps, and QMK/Vial configuration. Daily carrying in my backpack.
This is the trade off of using a custom layout (based on vanilla Colemak) as a unibody split keyboard. However, considering how much direct and indirect posture correction they allowed me, and that I can work all day everyday without any discomfort, I easily consider them a worthy investment.

PS: sharing late because I now have a phone with a functioning camera again.

Dear muscle memory— I promise to not update this keyboard's keymap for at least the next month to give you a chance to get used to all the new key assignments and combos. Sincerely...
-
My middle right thumb key has been playing up again, so I've started experimenting with a few(!) things. Current #keymap is probably not the best advert for a 40% #ergomech #mechkeeb #Keyboard... 🙄
Leaning deeply into combos. Learning a lot about the difference between things that seem to make sense when abstracted vs things that make actual sense in action.
Muscle memory is being battered, but it feels good to experiment towards best fit. It will (/may?) pare down in the near future...

I guess I forgot one thing:
- Ergonomic keyboards! -
In other #ergomech #mechanicalkeyboard news, looks like I cleared a random bluetooth disconnection issue that's been plaguing my Fifi keyboard in recent weeks. Thought it was a firmware issue at one point, but I ended up swapping the microcontrollers over to good effect; the left side wasn't sitting properly in its hot-swap sockets but seems to work fine when installed on the right. /shrug
Considering learning Colemak-DH. But I really probably don't need to.

I'm in niches of niches.
I use an #iPad as my primary computer. I also use a 36-key split #ergomech keyboard for an input device. So no globe key. #iPadOS allows for remapping a few modifier keys, so I've set my capslock as a globe/fn key (I have a capsword key in my keymap, but that's another story). I also use a few third-party keyboards. Grammarly on occasion. Lazyboard for snippets. Emoji. There are a few gotchas, but mostly I'm happy to be able to set things up in a way that works for me.

#ergomech #mechanicalkeyboard #zmk
To confirm, in ZMK firmware (for a keyboard like a Corne), board = MCU and shield = keyboard?
I mean, this is what my build.yaml says, and yet my brain resists...

#vim and #NeoVim users on ergonomic keyboards, what did you do when you realized that the hjkl binds for navigation are not ergonomic?
I have just set up my layout on my new column staggered split keyboard, and found that using i for up, jkl for left down and right is just the most convenient for me for navigation. This of course interferes greatly with my neovim use.
what are your strategies to solve this conundrum?

My video on the unboxing and assembling the Iris Rev. 8 is up on three platforms!
I have been waiting for this piece of hardware to be available in the store for quite a while, and then waited a long time for the keycaps to get through customs, but now I have it, assembled in its full glory!
I'll "only" have to figure out how to take full advantage of the RP2040 chip, so I can have the best experience!
(other links coming in replies)

I'm trying to get my #KeebIo Iris rev. 8 configured on #ArchLinux, so I downloaded the #Vial appimage from GitHub, and created an udev rule in accordance with their guide. Unfortunately, it does not work.
I also got the #Via appimage, which works, it prompted me for a root password and created an udev rule.
Is there a reason for that? Is it just a fact that Vial support less keyboard types than Via?
-
Finished assembling the Iris rev 8!
I'll get a few screws to make it tentable, then I'll have to figure out a key map so both Hungarian and Korean input works with symbols and all the jazz...Then I will ask my wife to write my layout on the empty key caps. Easy😅😂

Today I finally placed an order for keeb.io's Iris rev 8 keyboard!
Let's see how it pans out. Now I'll need to grab some compatible keycaps by the time it arrives here.
-
Day ten of not being able to purchase the Iris rev. 8 from keeb.io due to it being out of stock.
Instead, I read this long, amazing article on how to (and why) use the home row keys as modifiers. Now I just have to wait an indeterminate time to be able to get the hardware to try this out on.
-
Now it's day 8 of me finding out that the Iris rev. 8 is out of stock on keeb.io.
Very sad week behind me. -
...
- Parts for the next #ergomech #mechanicalkeyboard have almost all arrived. Looking forward to carving some time out to break out the soldering iron and build it. My little fingers are particularly excited.
- Added a number of plants to my live/work space. Celebrating my longest streak of not killing a plant.

Okay, so I finally made up my mind to buy an #Ergonomic #Keyboard again, now a column-staggered one.
I decided to get the Iris Rev. 8, as it has a reasonable amount of keys, it is hotswappable, I don't have to do any soldering, but still very customizable.
Of course they are out of stock now. 😭

Made a new #mechanicalkeyboard! It’s a Charybdis Nano designed by bastardkb, and it’s not for me, it’s for @joenash. This time, I #3dprinted the case, but no handwiring - really cool flexible PCBs. It works non-tented too. Do you want a silly keyboard? I like talking about keyboards and soldering stuff, so maybe I can help. Say hi!
