The #Ergodox. A TypeMatrix × Kinesis hybrid. A keyboard we’ve all dreamed of (and a pioneer in open-hardware DIY keebs), but which has neither the efficiency of the Kinesis nor the simplicity of the TypeMatrix. Better in a museum than on your desktop.

I've been a little naughty and gone and got myself a new Keyboard. I'll soon be the owner of a Lily58 with Choc lowprokb ambiant twilights with a carry case.
I wanted a ZSA Voyager, but didn't want to pay twice (once for purchase, second for import) and the Lilly seemed a good compromise (and cheaper).
Just a little nervous about tenting, but I'll give it a go.

UPDATE: I talked myself out of it and into a #voyager with choc red switches
I'm thinking about getting an #ergodox #moonlander
Anyone wanna talk me out of it? @adamhsparks @snystrom

#ZSA, which makes #Ergodox EZ, is leaving money on the table. I have EZ, and I've been looking for a few years now a new keyboard, but it must be wireless. I already had a Microsoft Sculpt wireless ~2013-2017, which worked fine. I wanted Ergodox EZ in 2017, but now I've been looking for a wireless version.
ZSA has these explanations why cables, but I just don't buy those explanations because I had a wireless keyboard before 2017, and it worked. https://www.zsa.io/wireless

Just got in my ErgodoxEZ — I'm a longtime #Ergodox user, but I wanted a more suitable portable option than my hand-built ones with their layered-acrylic cases.
This is the first time I've seen a company call out their manufacturing partner, and that gives me the warm fuzzies to see them recognize Tibbo Technology of Taiwan on the device itself.
Does anyone know, is the signature on the device from the person who assembled it?
EDIT: it's the founder's signature. Neat.

Dug out my #ergodox again after a longer hiatus caused by inexplicaple disconnects. Guess it was something on the OS side... So happy to have it back on my desktop!

I did an interview with the ZSA (mechanical+programmable keyboard folks) in June, and it was just released yesterday!
It's a bit about game dev but mostly about keyboards. Makes me feel a little shy watching it, but i'm recently trying to flip that emotion into sharing more. Gotta put myself out there!
Check it out on vimeo: https://vimeo.com/1019365096

Üben - aber was?
(Umstellen auf "Clicky" scheidet aus, weil zu laut.) -
My #ergodox keyboard started acting very strangely yesterday, sending off all kinds of untoward keys to my computer, so for the time being I'm back to my old steelseries thingy.
-
This is (one of the reasons) why I'm using an orthogonal #keyboard with thumb keys: one gets modifiers symmetricaly on both sides. E.g. #ergodox #glove80

I recently switch keyboards to an Ergodox EZ, and I am still ramping-up; I'm now at the 7th iteration of the keyboard config. It's a really powerful tool, that can feel a bit overwhelming at first; I recommend starting with the default configuration.
For example, I did not understand why some held keys did not behave as I expected. After spending some time reading the generated C code, it turns out I did not configure them properly, since I used the "tapped then held" feature, instead of simply "held". So it now works as expected!I also took the time to configure my first macro, so that I can have a key combination that sends Mic Mute shortcut , then Play/Pause ; this way I can listen to music while still being reachable by my colleagues remotely.

each day, I'm "sadder" that I cannot use it everywhere 😕

To be fair, the #keyboard (and computer at large) is just for gaming. When's the last time a game needed you to type a curly brace?
My #Ergodox #Moonlander has served me quite well up until this second, but I may need to rethink my layout choices if I'm typing any more code here.

Backstory::
So before I got into mechanical keyboards, I always bought prefabs and never thought anything of mechanicals. Someone introduced me and convinced me to take on the hobby and had a smooth transition into becoming an enthusiast.
My first keyboard I had assembled myself was a GH60 Satan pcb with clear Gateron switches. I was aiming for a clear/rgb aesthetic. In the process of assembling it myself, I gained a lot of experience soldering and desoldering. This helped me land a better paying job I held for two year afterward before moving on. Overall, the entire process of putting together the parts and programming my keyboard was as much entertaining to me as it was insightful and educational. In the pic(today):::
The pcb I use today is a
- #1upkeyboards 1UP RGB 60% PCB HTE (Hotswap Tsangan Edition)
- Clear #Gateron switches
- Clear blank keycap set from #MaxKeyboards as well as a few artesian keycaps
- Modified case from the original GH60 SatanIn the future:::
My next planned build is an #ergodox which I already have the resistors soldered onto the pcbs, but still need the remaining parts(switches, caps etc) which I will need to order. -
When trying to figure out ergonomics with your keyboard tray, don't forget to leave space for a napping area #catsofmastodon #ergodox

@tynstar @esther this has been my experience as well. Though there was a brief period where switching from one keyboard style to another would slow me down, it was only for a few minutes. And after a few months even that went away. Now I can type equally well on flat orthos (#ergodox), curved orthos (#KinesisAdvantage), and typical staggered keyboards without difficulty.
-
Had to fiddle with my #ergodox keyboard layout for a little while.
-
@nthcdr portability is a problem. i can take my #moonlander to a cafe, if it's noisy enough that the click-clack of the keys won't drive them nuts, but my tenting kit is metal and *heavy*--pain in the ass, transporting it.
ZSA just announced a low-profile #ergodox-ish kb meant for laptop use--not worth it for me, but hopefully it helps someone
w/out homerow modifiers and multi-use keys there's every chance i'd be a vim user. they're just...how keyboards should work.
-
Took me weeks to not forget taking my #mechanicalkeyboard home from work to clean over the weekend, which I planned to do for a long time. Finally did it, and my #ergodox looks like brand new again.
... Now guess what I forgot to take with me back to work on Monday? 😭
Luckily, I work on a laptop, providing me with a builtin fallback keyboard I cannot forget or lose. 😮💨

A friendly reminder that a #mechanicalkeyboard should be cleaned once in a while. It's annoying, I did not do it for 3 years, but my #ergodox EZ is at least nicely built so I don't have to fear do destroy the electronics. The sculpted #keycaps give me a little bit of headache though. Wish I knew how many different there are and had a layout diagram.
